The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission has announced the four trout opening days for 2021:
- Saturday, March 27 – 2021 Regional Mentored Youth Trout Day in 18 southeastern counties.
- Saturday, April 3 – 2021 Regional Opening Day of Trout Season in 18 southeastern counties.
- Saturday, April 10 – 2021 Statewide Mentored Youth Trout Day.
- Saturday, April 17 – 2021 Statewide Opening Day of Trout Season.
The separate, earlier regional mentored youth and opening days are set to occur in the 18 southeastern counties of Adams, Berks, Bucks, Chester, Cumberland, Dauphin, Delaware, Franklin, Juniata, Lancaster, Lebanon, Lehigh, Montgomery, Northampton, Perry, Philadelphia, Schuylkill and York.
In announcing the trout season schedule, the commission noted that “all seasons and dates are subject to change.”
Although vaccinations to protect against the coronavirus began yesterday, state officials have noted that doses will not be available to the general public until the late spring of 2021.
Last spring, in response to the growing coronavirus pandemic and the need for social distancing, the commission first collapsed the mentored youth days into one statewide day and the opening day of the trout season into a second statewide day, and then went with an unannounced and sudden opening of the trout fishing season about 2 weeks early on a Tuesday rather than a Saturday.
In April, as the traditional opening day of the trout fishing season approached, the commission worried about the shoulder-to-shoulder crowds that normally show up on the first day of the season.
“Spreading out that impact of the first day, that rush of activity,” overruled other considerations, Tim Schaeffer, executive director of the commission, explained at the time.
“The concern all along has not been with fishing. It was the number of folks that we would expect to see on opening day and our youth trout day, which is inherently a group activity.
“We considered the range of options available to us and what everyone coalesced around was what we did this morning,” which was the sudden opening of all trout seasons statewide on a Tuesday.
Other options considered ranged from continuing with the planned schedule to delaying the opening until the following month.
