Winter ball highlights: Joe Dunand shows defensive versatility in LIDOM - Fish Stripes

kuaciasing.blogspot.com

For much of 2020, COVID-19 brought baseball to a halt for players within the Marlins organization. Some of them are now making up for that lost time. Just like in previous years, Fish Stripes will be consistently updating the whereabouts of your favorite Fish during the offseason. At FishStripes.com/offseason, you can find weekly news, stats, highlights and (small sample size) analysis.

LIDOM (Dominican Republic)

2020-21 season stats

  • Lewin Díaz (Estrellas Orientales)—.185/.290/.259, 1 HR, 8 K, 74 wRC+ in 62 PA
  • Jesús Sánchez (Toros del Este)—.278/.297/.472, 1 HR, 10 K, 123 wRC+ in 37 PA
  • Joe Dunand (Leones del Escogido)—.324/.405/.559, 3 HR, 24 K, 202 wRC+ in 79 PA
  • Jorge Guzman (Gigantes del Cibao)—18.00 ERA, 2.00 WHIP in 1.0 IP

Strange week for Díaz. He has a streak of 25 plate appearances without a strikeout and now has just as many walks as strikeouts in winter ball. Impressive! But that has actually coincided with a slump. The first baseman has only barreled the ball a couple of times recently, generally getting underneath it and generating harmless pop-ups. After weeks of regularly hitting in the cleanup spot, he’s been dropped to the bottom third of the Estrellas lineup.

Sánchez doesn’t get consistent playing time on a Toros roster that is loaded with major leaguers. It’s a crowded outfield following the arrival of Yasiel Puig. Reigning LIDOM MVP Peter O’Brien is also ahead of him on the depth chart.

To accommodate Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Dunand’s defensive versatility is being tested. Guerrero is getting most of the reps at third base, with Dunand sometimes winding up there as a late-inning defensive replacement after starting at either shortstop or first base.

Dunand left Monday’s game with leg tightness, according to the Leones manager. The team was optimistic that he avoided a significant injury, but the 25-year-old didn’t play on either Tuesday or Wednesday.

Guzman, as far as I can tell, hasn’t spent a single day on the Gigantes active roster since making his lone pitching appearance.

LPB (Colombia)

2020-21 season stats

  • Harold Ramirez (Caimanes de Barranquilla)—.286/.407/.347, 13 K in 59 PA

After a brief first base experiment earlier this month, Harold is being utilized at more familiar positions (left field, right field and designated hitter).

LPB is not quite as low-scoring as LIDOM, but the league’s playing conditions do supress home runs. In 14 games, the Caimanes and their opponents have only combined to hit one ball over the fence.

LVBP (Venezuela)

2020-21 season stats

  • José Salas (Águilas del Zulia)—.200/.273/.233, 13 K in 32 PA

I’ll emphasize it every week: Salas is 10 years younger than the average LVBP player!

He began the season 2-for-2 at the plate, then had 2-for-26 slump before going 2-for-2 again on Wednesday coming off the bench.

Daniel Álvarez Montes of IVC Networks broadcasted Salas’ debut and several of his games since then. He joined the Fish Stripes podcast this week and shared great insight into the prospect’s skills and intangibles (Salas conversation begins around the 19:30 mark).

LBPRC (Puerto Rico)

  • Anthony Maldonado (Criollos de Caguas)—1.93 ERA, 0.64 WHIP, 7 K in 4.2 IP
  • Brian Navarreto (Indios de Mayagüez)—.438/.526/1.000, 1 HR, 1 K in 19 PA
  • Antonio Velez (Indios de Mayagüez)—11.25 ERA, 2.75 WHIP, 2 K in 4.0 IP

Velez should be making his second start for the Indios before the end of the weekend.
