The California Department of Fish and Wildlife is advising local sport fishing enthusiasts to fish responsibly on the state’s upcoming free fishing day on Saturday, July 3, when no sport fishing license is required.

The state regularly holds two free fishing days a year, regularly on Fourth of July and Labor Day weekends.

In a release, CDFW urges anglers to choose to cast off in waters which have not been extensively impacted by drought conditions and to be responsible with the amount of fish they collect.

“California anglers are incredibly fortunate to have such a wide variety of fish species and a huge diversity of fishing opportunities and experiences to choose from July 3,” said CDFW Director Charlton H. Bonham via press release. “We would ask that anglers pick their destinations carefully given the drought conditions impacting some of our waters. Please try and avoid those waters visibly suffering from the drought’s impacts where warm water and low water already may be stressing fish populations.”

Any person or group of people looking to fish in the region’s inland waters can help keep fish population survival numbers higher by catching and releasing. To increase likelihood of survival, CDFW recommends trying to keep a fish in water as long as possible when removing hooks, handling the fish as little as possible and fishing before the day’s temperatures heat up.

All other regulations remain in effect during free fishing days, these include limits on bags and bag sizes, gear restrictions, report card requirements and fishing hours, among others. CDFW advises anglers must have the right report cards if fishing steelhead or sturgeon anywhere in the state or salmon in the Smith and Klamath-Trinity river systems.

Fishing licenses for the rest of the year can be purchased through the CDFW website, at https://wildlife.ca.gov/Licensing/Online-Sales. A basic annual resident sport fishing license in California currently costs $52.66, while a one-day fishing license costs $17.02.

Awards keep coming for HSU softball’s Starr

The school year might be out, but Humboldt State softball standout Izzy Starr is still raking in the recognition for her work on the field in the Spring 2021 season.

The Lumberjacks catcher and third base player was named to the 2021 Academic All-District Softball Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) this week.

Starr was named to the District 8 team, which includes teams in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, the Great Northwest Athletic Conference and the PacWest Conference.

The recognition is the fifth special naming the sophomore-turning-junior player has been bestowed with since the end of the season. Most notable of these, she was named to the 2021 National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-American team after the Jacks’ season ended in May.

Other accolades include a place in the NFCA Division II All-West Region Team and the Division-II CCA All-West Region Team. She was included in Schutt Sports and the NFCA’s nationwide DII player and pitcher Top 30 list of the year.

As recorded by Humboldt State, Starr’s outstanding performances this season include a .468 batting average, .957 in slugging, six home runs and a total of 45 bases reached over the course of the team’s full 14-game calendar.

Starr drove in 13 runs, connected for three triples and struck out just once in 47 trips to the dish. She shares the team-high 22 hits with Micaela Harris.
