Celebrity golf Saturday: Curry speaks on social injustice; Fish scoring frenzy - Reno Gazette Journal

Steph Curry is determined to win the celebrity golf tournament, due to his own competitive nature and to prove a basketball player can beat the field of athletes and actors.

Curry, the Golden State Warriors standout, is also active in the social justice rallies that have been taking place this spring and summer.

He is wearing three different pairs of shoes throughout the American Century Championship tournament. His shoes will be auctioned off later for social injustice causes.

This is Curry's eighth appearance at Edgewood in the American Century Championship celerity golf tournament. His best finish was fourth in 2017.

After Friday's round he had 14 points, then he headed out to the practice putting green to work on his game. He picked up 16 on Saturday for a two-day total of 30 heading into Sunday's final round. He is in 11th place.

"It's awesome to be back here. Obviously all the things that are going on in our country and our world, just to be able to play golf and compete," Curry said. "Obviously no fans. It's a little different vibe. It's way too quiet. But once you get over that, it's just kind of playing golf like usual. And I enjoyed it."

Curry said the death of Breonna Taylor weighs on him and is a huge reason for his social activism.

Taylor was a 26-year-old African-American emergency medical technician who was fatally shot by Louisville Metro Police Department officers on March 13, 2020.

"Demanding and praying and wishing for justice for her and her family. And anytime you have an opportunity to be on a stage or a platform to raise awareness and to continue the conversation that's going on in our country, I'm all for that, and send these to the Black Lives Matter organization and hopefully raise a lot of money for the amazing work that they're doing," Curry said of his shoes.

He said Black Lives Matter will auction off his shoes to help raise money.

"We all have roles to play in terms of changing the racial climate in our country. And this is definitely more than just a moment that we're feeling," he said. "This is a very small gesture, but hopefully the money goes a long way. And hopefully they continue the conversation of what needs to change all the way around."

He said it was strange getting used to how quiet the golf course is this week at Edgewood. No spectators are allowed, due to the coronavirus pandemic.

"Thankfully, the boats that are out there, in a very socially distant space, they brought a little noise down the last three holes," Curry said.

ACC Scores

There were about 100 boats along holes No. 17 and 18 on Saturday.

Curry won his bet with his father, Dell Curry, at last year's celebrity tournament. But Dell won't be singing karaoke yet due to the pandemic, so Steph Curry is holding on to that. Dell Curry is tied for fourth place with 36 points, with Tony Romo and Derek Lowe.

"I'm playing with house money right now," Steph Curry said of their bet.

Steph Curry said the Warriors can get back on track next season. They are not playing in the revised NBA postseason, scheduled to start later this month.

"We still have a great core. We have an understanding of who we are," Curry said. "lt was a crazy year. My hand injury. Klay (Thompson) being out all year. And Draymond (Green) in and out of the lineup with injuries all year. A lot of new young guys. It's definitely different. But this could be a blessing in disguise in terms of this next three-, four-year run we want to have, get rested, get healthy. We'll obviously be watching Orlando and taking all that in.

"But come next season, wherever that starts, we've got to be ready. Had a long seven years. Nice to get a little refresh."

Curry helps sponsor a golf team at Howard University after meeting a student there

"I went to Howard to debut their screening of a documentary we made called 'Emmanuel,' and I talked to a lot of students there after the screening, and they had a lot of interest and passions.

"I talked to this student named Otis Ferguson IV, and he told me how much golf means to him, how much just the opportunity to play. He was trying to put together a club team. And the idea came just from that."

Curry said winning the ACC would be huge, for himself as well as NBA athletes and all active athletes.

No active athlete has won the tournament.

"I don't know how many active athletes that are here. But I'm pretty sure I don't think one's won before," Curry said. "But even for basketball players, this would be the first one to win from our sport. So that would mean a lot. It's not obviously just the win, but how much fun I have up here and the guys you get to compete against. So we've got some work to do."

Fish in front: Mardy Fish tore up the course on Saturday and tore up the record book.

Fish fired a course-record 63 on the way to earning 37 points in the Modified Stableford scoring system.

His 63 beats the previous course record at Edgewood of 64, set by Lee Trevino in the mid-1980s.

Fish has finished in the top five five times in his seven times playing the ACC, but has never won at Edgewood.

He made 10 birdies on Saturday.

Friday celebrity golf notebook: Mahomes says contract eases his mind, won't change his play

"It was a dream day, for sure. I've been looking for one of these out here. I've been looking to play well," Fish said. "I didn't particularly score well yesterday. And I hit it fine. I just didn't get it in the hole very quickly. Today was much cleaner. I had a lot of chances, a lot of looks, a lot of putts. And I missed some that were pretty close as well. My new strategy of just hitting driver and trying to figure it out from there is working OK."

Fish said he played nine holes with Jack Nicklaus last year and shot 29 for nine holes. He said Saturday's round ranks up with that one as his best rounds ever.

Fish said until the past week, he had only played golf about three or four times in the past month

"I've seen this course a bunch now and know the greens a little bit. And, yeah, I feel comfortable," Fish said.

He did not have a caddy Saturday.

"It's nice to sort of make up your mind and know what you're doing on your terms; and then if you miss it's on you, it's not on anyone else," he said. "It's been nice to sort of jump in a cart and sort of stay away from everyone and teach yourself a little bit, which is the distancing thing.

Friday's leader Kyle Williams scored 27 points n Saturday's second round and is in second place going into Sunday's final round with 52 points.

John Smoltz is in third with 37 and two-time defending champion Tony Romo is tied for fourth  with 36 points.

Williams, 37, played 13 seasons as a defensive  tackle with the Buffalo Bills and was a six-time Pro Bowl selection.

Romo's driver explodes: Romo's driver exploded while he was on the driving range before Saturday's round.

He had a spare in his hotel room and was able to get underway on time for his 10:25 a.m. start Saturday.

Mahomes and Riggle bet: Patrick Mahomes and Rob Riggle bet $2,500 on Saturday's round with the money going to one of the local charities the ACC donates to every year.

Mahomes is the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback and was named the MVP after the Chiefs won the Super Bowl last February.

Riggle is an actor/comedian.

Mahomes is at minus-4 for the tournament after losing 1 points Saturday. He won the bet as Riggle lost 7 points Saturday and is minus-7for the tournament.

Sunday tee times: Pairings were not announced as of press time Saturday night, but the first groups are expected to tee off starting at 8:30 a.m. Sunday with the leaders starting at 10:25 a.m.
