CLEVELAND, Ohio — The dog days of summer have come early, and while sizzling summer weather will make for some sweaty days of walleye fishing on Lake Erie, angling success has been outstanding all along the Ohio shoreline of Lake Erie.

Ohio Department of Health recommendations have caused Gov. Mike DeWine to cancel the 41st annual Governor’s Fish Ohio Day based at Port Clinton on Tuesday, July 14. The event has grown in popularity in recent years as walleye populations have soared, drawing crowds of media, legislators and local tourism officials that are unacceptable in the face of COVID-19 pandemic.

The areas where most of the fishing guides took Fish Ohio crews last July are still among the top spots for catching a limit of walleye this week. DeWine and his grandkids hauled in an impressive number of walleye with Capt. Jerry Cooley just a short ride from his Lakefront Marina in downtown Port Clinton.

On Wednesday morning, reports from guides in the area reported the walleye fishing was outstanding off Port Clinton. The best spots were around the various can buoys marking the Firing Zone off Camp Perry.

Lorain, Avon Point walleye fishing good, steelhead reported deep

The walleye off Lorain are biting, with excellent catches reported while either trolling or drift-and-cast fishing. The anglers who are casting are doing best in 25 to 35 feet of water with weight-forward spinners and small mayfly-style spinner rigs with gold blades. Boats are trolling deeper waters in the 35- to 45-foot range, and every lure category seems to be working right now. Diving plugs, crawler harnesses and diving planers and spoons are taking limits of walleye.

Some steelhead trout die-hards are making the run to 50 to 55 feet of water off Lorain and Avon Point, and finding success while trolling small spoons.

To get the spoons down to the target zones, online Dipsy Divers, Tru-Trip and Jet Divers are needed.

James Brooks of Tallmadge caught Ohio’s state record steelhead trout, a 21.3-pounder, while fishing the deep waters off Lorain in June of 2010. He was trolling with spoons.

Pandemic causes FLW bass tournament to move from New York to Ohio

New York announced travel restrictions because of the COVID-19 pandemic, which caused the national FLW bass tournament trail to make a last-minute decision to head for the Ohio waters of Lake Erie on July 9-11.

Sandusky city manager Eric Bowser welcomed the tournament trail, but did restrict the crowds at the Shelby Street Boat Launch in downtown Sandusky. Only tournament anglers and officials will be allowed to attend the daily take off at 6 a.m. at the Shelby Boat Launch, with the weigh-ins starting at 2 p.m.

FLW will have live online coverage through its “FLW Live” weigh-in broadcasts at FLWfishing.com.

Steelhead Expo at the Rocky River Nature Center canceled

The Sept. 19 Steelhead Expo at the Cleveland Metroparks’ Rocky River Nature Center in North Olmsted has been canceled due to the pandemic. The Cleveland Metroparks has announced it will close the Rocky River Nature Center for all events through December.

Because of the uncertainty associated with the pandemic, the sponsoring Ohio Central Basin Steelheaders Board of Directors decided that cancelation was necessary, said OCBS President Tom Blotzer.

Largemouth bass biting around the Portage Lakes

The summer largemouth bass bite has been luring fishermen to the Portage Lakes, south of Akron, in recent weeks. Early-rising anglers are casting topwater lures before the sun comes up, from frogs and poppers to buzz baits. During the day, the top tactic has been to cast the weed edges with plastic worms and swim jigs. Turkeyfoot and East reservoirs have been the top waters among the Portage Lakes.

Panfish have wrapped up their spawning season and are moving to deeper waters, but can be found in good numbers with fish-finding sonar. The yellow perch and crappie are being taken on minnows suspended under a stick float. The bluegills are being caught on tiny Pin Min jigs tipped with maggots or wax worms.
