Muskie are New York’s largest freshwater game fish.
Their legendary ability to challenge and confound anglers and their massive size potential have often inspired anglers to forsake other fish for a chance to encounter the “fish of 10,000 casts.”
This year’s fishing season for these monsters opened (as it usually does) on third weekend in June. The season on most waterways closed Nov. 30. Exceptions include the St. Lawrence and Lower Niagara rivers and Lake Ontario, where the season ends Dec. 15.
This photo gallery consists of eye-opening fish landed in Upstate New York this year – the largest being a 54-incher (with a 24-inch girth) landed Nov. 23 on the St. Lawrence River by Cassie Pope, of Rochester, who was fishing at the time with her father, Tim, and Capt. At least 13 lakes and 19 rivers have muskellunge populations in New York State. The St. Lawrence River, Upper Niagara River and Chautauqua Lake are the most renowned muskie fisheries in the state.
The state’s current state record – a 69-pound, 15-ounce behemoth caught in 1957 by Arthur Lawton -- was caught in the St. Lawrence. It measured 64 inches The river’s fishing guides are confident that record is l,ong overdue to be broken. Capt. Walters, who has underwater video cameras on his downriggers, videotaped a fish that he estimated had to be some 70 inches long.
His biggest muskie landed on the St. Lawrence to date measured 59 inches. The fish was caught by one of one of his clients, Ed Beers, of New Jersey, in 2010.

Other waterways where muskie can be caught include Waneta, Greenwood, Bear, and the Cassadaga lakes, and in inland rivers such as the Susquehanna, Allegheny, Delaware, Great Chazy and major tributaries of the St. Lawrence River.

Vicky Banks, an avid muskie angler from Kentucky, caught and released this monster 49-inch, muskie recently on Chautauqua Lake, She caught it on a Baker lure and was fishing with the Muddy Creek Fishing Guide service out of Long Point on the lake.

Aug 10 Another HUGE fish from Lake Ontario. John Tysco wrote: "My best buddy Andrew Curtin and I caught this beauty yesterday at Henderson Harbor. We fought it for 45 minutes took a couple pictures and quickly released it. Took a little while to revive it so we didn’t want to mess around too long trying to take many measurements. We were trolling, so please be sure to mention it was a team effort." He added: " I’m a Syracuse firefighter at Rescue Company and my buddy is a RN at the VA. Caught the muskie trolling a plug."
