CO Eric Sullivan (Brainerd) was accompanied by COC (Conservation Officer Candidate) Nicholas Baum and worked ice angling and recreational vehicle activity. Sullivan and Baum observed several violations, including failure to register an ATV/snowmobile, failure to display registration and numbers, no ATV safety certificate, operating an ATV without headlights, no tow bar when towing passengers, angling without a license, no license in possession, extra lines, illegal-length fish, and underage consumption of alcohol. Sullivan and Baum assisted with a snowmobile accident and want to remind riders of the variable trail conditions and the need to ride with caution.
CO Bob Mlynar (Aitkin) worked angling, snowmobile and ATV activity. Despite ideal conditions, the local cross-country ski trail is seeing few skiers.
CO Patrick McGowan (Pine River) patrolled Crow Wing County for angling and snowmobile activity. McGowan also worked Mille Lacs Lake. Enforcement action was taken for numerous violations.
CO Jim Guida (Brainerd East) worked sport fishing enforcement this past week. A big-game investigation and a litter complaint were concluded with charges. Guida also issued permits for road-killed deer.
CO Tony Flerlage (Crosby) checked snowmobile riders enjoying the fresh snow on the trails. He also checked anglers on area lakes. Most people reported fishing was slow.
District 2 - Bemidji area
CO (Conservation Officer) Brice Vollbrecht (Bemidji #1) checked anglers on area lakes. Individuals are catching a mix of panfish, walleyes and northern pike. Individuals are reminded to check shelters for reflective material and IDs before leaving them on the ice. Vollbrecht completed field training with COC (Conservation Officer Candidate) Bechel. They assisted with a search on Irving Lake for an individual who went through the ice. They also spent a day checking anglers on Leech Lake.
CO Tom Hutchins (Crookston) reports working primarily angling and recreational vehicle enforcement this past week. Several related contacts were made throughout the week. Angling, ATV, and snowmobile violations were encountered.
CO Tim Gray (Bagley) checked anglers and tagged some fur.
CO Al Peterson (Osage) worked ongoing cases and angling, trapping, snowmobile and shelter enforcement. The fish bite has slowed in most areas and snowmobile trail conditions remain poor.
CO Angie Warren (Mahnomen) worked angling, spearing and fish house activity. Anglers report fair to slow success. Snowmobile activity was worked with wooded areas having a bit more snow and lakes having plenty of top water.
District 4 - Walker area
CO Calie Kunst (Remer) continued to check anglers, trappers and snowmobile riders. Various violations were found and enforcement action was taken. Many people were out enjoying the recent snowfall on the snowmobile trails.
CO Michael Cross (Lake George) worked primarily ice angling and snowmobiling. Cross attended a snowmobile detail in International Falls where he worked with other officers on snowmobile patrol. Enforcement activity for the past week consisted of fishing out of season on a designated trout lake, angling with an extra line and possessing live minnows on a designated trout lake. As a reminder, designated trout lakes differ from normal inland lakes and the regulations, which can be found on Page 25 of the Minnesota fishing regulations, should be referenced prior to going out on the lake.
CO Jacque Hughes (Longville) continued to check angling and snowmobile activity. Ice conditions vary anywhere from 5 to 16 inches in some areas. Continue to use caution before driving onto the ice.
CO Mark Mathy (Cass Lake) checked anglers over the busy holiday weekend. Snowmobiles also started getting out on the trails with the most recent snowfall. Open wetland and aquatic plant management cases were completed. Work continues on an investigation from the bear season. A fishing TIP call was also investigated. Enforcement action was taken for several angling, snowmobile, and ATV-related violations.
District 11 - St. Cloud area
CO Todd VanderWeyst (Paynesville) worked with snowmobile owners with registration numbers and serial numbers that weren’t matching up. He continues to hear about thin ice conditions from a trapper who busted through the ice on foot – not once but twice on two different bodies of water on the same day.
CO Keith Bertram (Long Prairie) checked an angler on a special regulation lake who stated he didn’t have any fish. A trail of blood in the snow told a different story. The illegal fish was located and the angler apologetically accepted his citation.
District 12 - Princeton area
CO Angela Londgren (Cambridge) checked anglers and hunters and patrolled snowmobile trails. Calls were taken regarding trespassing, injured animals, and wetlands violations.
CO Mike Krauel (Mora) spent the past week checking anglers and patrolling for snowmobile activity. Krauel also spent time working on equipment maintenance.
CO Nate Benkofske (Milaca) reports finishing multiple deer investigations. Enforcement action was taken for deer hunting without a license, untagged deer, overlimit of bucks, and illegal party hunting. Snowmobile violations were also addressed along local trails.
CO Tony Musatov (Sauk Rapids) checked ice anglers, ATV riders, and snowmobile activity. Violations were found for no angling license and no registration. A hunting trespass complaint was investigated and animal-related calls were handled.
Aviation Section
Standby CO Pilot Tim Gray (Bemidji) checked on skiplane take-offs and landings.
NR Pilot John Heineman (Bemidji) flew two wolf-pack count telemetry flights. This warm weather is nice, but he had to cancel flights due to low ceilings and fog.
Standby NR Pilot Jessica Holmes (Grand Rapids) reports completing a Park Rapids fisheries creel flight. She also completed her Flight Instructor Renewal Course and attended an AOPA webinar.
CO Pilot Jason Jensen (Brainerd) gave skiplane instruction to other CO pilots. Jensen also checked area trout anglers and snowmobile/ATV users.
NR Pilot Brad Maas (Brainerd) worked on helicopter maintenance items, and attended aviation webinars.
CO Pilot Charles Scott (Grand Rapids) continued toward completion of his training tasks. He completed a snowmobile training course, checked anglers on area lakes and spent time on snowmobile enforcement.
