GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WMTV) -Fish Calloway is mourning the loss of his longtime friend and on-air radio co-host Connie Kellie. The two made up the popular “Connie & Fish” radio duo for years in Madison.
Connie died on Monday after an almost four-month battle with liver cancer. She was diagnosed on September 21st, 2020.
“Dan (her husband) was with her and I was in the house with the family when Connie passed,” said Fish.
After years more than 25 years of friendship and working together, Fish is devastated that she’s now gone.
“I’m shocked, saddened, frustrated,” said Fish in a virtual interview with NBC15 News. “(These) are emotions that could and are used by all of us because of the speed that this vicious cancer ripped through her body,”
Connie and Fish are both Michigan natives and met in college at Central Michigan University in 1995. Fish says in 1996, he began working as Connie’s intern and credits her for giving him a shot in radio.
“Connie & Fish” started on the radio in Madison at Z104 in 2001. Fish says Connie was a trailblazer in the industry as she became the first woman to headline a morning radio show in Madison.
“As far as Connie’s legacy goes, she provided joy, she provided laughter, she provided thought. But she also provided confidence, a feeling of empowerment to women, specifically,” he said.
“Connie & Fish” eventually made their way to Grand Rapids, Michigan where they worked together as on-air co-hosts. You could catch that show here in Madison from 3-7 p.m. on 93.1 Jamz.
“She would want to say thank you to all those people that she got to know and those maybe she didn’t get to know but they still had faith in what she was doing on the air,” Fish said. “She learned from you as much as you may have learned from her,”
Connie Kellie was 52-years-old.
