MADISON (WKOW) — Wisconsinites are invited to grab their gear and get fishing this weekend.
The DNR is hosting Winter Free Fishing Weekend Jan. 16-17.
Anglers can fish all water bodies in the state where there is an open season. All other fishing regulations apply, such as limits on the number and size of fish you can keep and any seasons when you must release certain fish species.
Outdoor enthusiasts say this event is a great time to discover the fun and excitement of winter fishing without a license or trout stamp.
“The kids come in and they’re real wide-eyed and excited to get out there for the first time and learn, and also just to be with mom, dad, whoever they go out with,” said Dorn Outdoor Pro Shop Sales Associate Steve Schmikla.
The DNR is reminding people that no ice is safe ice. Be aware of the honeycomb effect, which occurs after freeze-thaw-freeze conditions and weakens the ice. If you are unsure of ice conditions, the DNR asks you stay safely on shore.
The Minnesota DNR is also hosting a Take a Kid Ice Fishing Weekend from Saturday, January 16 through Monday, January 18.
