LAKE OROVILLE: King salmon continue to be the most sought out species, and Craig Newton of Will Fish Tackle reported decent action for 3 to 5 kings per trip trolling at depths from 30 to 60 feet with pearl hoochies or tube baits behind a dodger. The salmon are congregating around the baitfish schools. Bass fishing is in winter mode, but the spotted bass are getting more active. Eleven bass tournaments are scheduled in February and March with a mix of club circuits and major tournaments such as Best Bass. The Bidwell Canyon launch ramp is open on Saturday and Sunday with the Spillway open seven days per week. Updated information available at 530-538-2200. The lake rose to 35 percent as water is being held back behind the dam.
FEATHER RIVER: Steelhead fishing is good in the upper river. Striper fishing is slow, but there are a few resident fish. The river is expected to rise two feet this week. Feather River Hatchery usually releases smolts at Boyd’s Pump in February which triggers an early striper bite before the main spring run. Sturgeon fishing is slow near the mouth of the Bear River.
SACRAMENTO RIVER, Red Bluff to Colusa: Fishing pressure is light. The river rose last week and is expected to rise again this week, which could bring the first sturgeon of the season above Colusa. Striper fishing is slow.
SACRAMENTO RIVER, Verona to Colusa: Rain has the river on the rise, and although sturgeon fishing has been slow, fish are expected to arrive near First Beach and Second Beach in Knights Landing soon as a few sturgeon have been reported. Striper fishing has been slow.
AMERICAN RIVER, Sacramento: Steelhead in the American River remains very slow for most anglers, but Craig Newton of Will Fish Tackle in Auburn said, “There were two guys out who landed one nice fresh steelhead along with a big dark buck this week. The fresh water inflow should bring in another pile of fish, and bank fishing with Little Cleo’s should be a good open. The river is clear with the lake of water released out of Folsom.” Flows Sunday at Fair Oaks remained low at 1075 cfs.
AMERICAN RIVER, above Folsom: The river above the dam is muddy from the recent storms, and it should remain off color with the snow melt and rain this week. The river is catch and release barbless hooks only above Folsom.
TRINITY RIVER: New steelhead have moved upriver with recent rains. Anglers are doing well with beads or roe fished below bobbers in the Lewiston area. Near Willow Creek, halfpounders are making up much of the catch, but a few adults also are showing. Expect more fish to move in from the Klamath with this week’s rains.
LAKE SHASTA: The lake came up 5 to 8 feet, and the bass are moving up into the shallows. With this week’s rain, the creek arms will become muddy, and the large swimbait action should improve in the off-color water. The best action remains on the bottom at depths to 60 feet with plastics on the drop-shot or similar finesse techniques. A few bass taken on deep-diving crankbaits in shad or crawdad patterns along with small swimbaits such as Keitech’s. Jeff Goodwin of Jeff Goodwin’s Guide Service said, “The trout are swimming near the surface and most are being taken trolling shad-imitation lures behind side planers. Getting the gear away from the boat is important during the coldwater months on Shasta Lake. The public docks of Centimudi, Sugar Loaf, Jones Valley, and Packer’s Bay are open. The lake rose slightly to 47 percent.
