Spring has finally arrived, and with it, we find many more awesome fishing opportunities to experience in the 10,000 Islands region in Florida. During the month of May, we have dry and mild weather compared to months past. The winds are relatively lighter, which makes the best environment for any angler itching to get out and fish.

With the warmer weather, we also see warmer water temperatures. We can usually find water temperatures hovering just above the 80-degree mark, making it ideal for attracting more fish as they make their annual migration out of the backwaters.

If you love offshore fishing, then now is the best time for it. You will find a good amount of permit and cobia. When targeting these fish, go for finger mullet, pinfish, pilchards, and large shrimp as bait for the most success.

Interested in redfish? You can find these fish closer to the oyster bars during high tide. Redfish prefer live bait, including pilchards, thread herring, shrimp, and crabs.

Speckled trout will be hanging around grassy water areas and in water between three and five feet deep. Use bucktail jigs tipped with shrimp. These are a favorite of this fish species and will definitely grab their attention.

Mangrove snapper is also readily available. They are native to the Gulf of Mexico and can be found in various saltwater settings, including brackish water areas. If these fish are on your list, then consider using shrimp, pilchards, and crustaceans as bait. For more fishing success, look for mangrove snapper around the docks and sea walls and around the deeper mangrove shorelines.

Snook is a great option for catch and release during this time. Snook season closes on May 1, but you can still find them for catch and release near the Mangrove shoreline.

Springtime fishing is sometimes considered the calm before the storm here in Florida. With summer comes the summer storms. So, to find a lot of success during the summertime, you may have to travel out further and at different times to avoid the storms.

With that being said, May is the ideal time to take advantage of the fishing opportunities Florida has to offer; while the weather is mild, the fish are active, and there is plenty to go around.

If you want to learn more about fishing in our area, you can hire a professional guide before heading out. The guide will share their expertise when it comes to local knowledge of tackle, bait, and the best areas to fish locally. Tight lines! Captain Brandon.
