FREEPORT, Ill. (WIFR) - A community mourns a heavy loss this week after losing two members of the Mrs. Mike’s Potato Chip family.

Matt Mordick, 44, died Sunday, Feb. 26, and his father, Robert “Butch” Mordick, 80, died Wednesday, March 1.

“They made such a great impact whether it’s by supporting businesses, eating local, shopping local, or nonprofits,” said Mort’s Bar & Grill Owner and Longtime Friend Mike Marten. “I played for a little league team called Mrs. Mike’s when I was 12 years old, so there’s so many memories not only with me, but throughout the community. They’ve touched them as well.”

April would’ve marked Butch’s 51st year as owner of the Freeport staple.

Community members took to social media with shared memories of the Mrs. Mike’s duo after the news of their deaths. A celebration of life will be held for both Butch and Matt at a date still to be determined. Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home in Freeport is handling the services.

“When my father got ill seven years ago, Matt and Dan and Butch were some of the first people that came to me to ask me if I need anything,” said Mort’s Bar & Grill Owner Mike Marten. “With time, everything will heal. But there is always going to be a missing part to this bar, that business and to this community.”
