Youth reel in dozens of fish at Homesteader - Powell Tribune

Matt Hansen was already in line before the gates to Powell’s cement pond opened Saturday. The 4-year-old had been looking forward to the annual Kids’ Fishing Day for a long time. The excitement was like waiting to open presents on Christmas morning, his mother said.

“He’s been waiting a very long time to come up and go fishing,” said Heather Hansen. “Since they put the water in, actually.”

The excitement of reeling in a stout trout is pretty hard to beat once spring hits northwest Wyoming. The Powell Recreation District has been hosting the annual event for 34 years. At this point, residents who fondly remember their first catch at the venue are bringing their own children to Homesteader Park.

Heather and her husband, Tyler, both remember the thrill of opening day when they were kids. That was more than 20 years ago. They married after being high school sweethearts and have started their kids early in the sport. Matt was already fishing when he was 1.

Despite Matt’s three years of experience, Javier Salazar, 5, caught the first fish of the day. Both families were at the event at 6 a.m. to get the prime spots. Salazar caught a nice 14-inch rainbow trout.

Powell Recreation District Director Colby Stenerson has been opening the gate for the event for 26 years now.

“It’s great to see the families together and the smiles on the kid’s faces,” he said.

By the end of the day, 70 of the more than 500 fish currently stocked in the pond had been caught. Another 600 will be stocked by the Game and Fish in July.

The gates are open until sunset through the summer months. The facility is open to the public, but all Wyoming Game and Fish Department rules apply — including a six-fish limit. Powell Parks Department Superintendent Tim Miller wants all 1,100 fish eventually stocked in the pond caught before the end of the summer.

“I hope they catch them all. It’s better than letting them go to waste,” Miller said, “because we can’t move them anywhere else [after the season ends].”
