LAKE OROVILLE: The story here are the king salmon, including many holdover fish. It’s an up and down bite, hot one day and slow the next, but if you hit it right it’s hot times. Most of the kings are in the 4- to 6-pound range, but lately a few approaching 7 and one 8 hit scales. Fish deep for the larger kings, as much as 100 to 120 feet according to “Rustic Rob” Reimers. Anglers trolling for kings are also catching some nicer rainbows.
FEATHER RIVER: Fishing is slow on the lower river, but shad are being caught at the Outlet. A few small stripers are biting in the Beercan Beach area.
BLACK BUTTE LAKE: Carol Pflum of Pflum Fun Rentals reported the bass and catfish are biting very well. Crappie have slowed down.
SACRAMENTO RIVER, Red Bluff to Colusa: Shad fishing has slowed. Some large resident stripers are being caught in swimbaits and glide baits. Sturgeon are still in the river and have been biting best at night. Salmon season opens July 16.
SACRAMENTO RIVER, Verona to Colusa: Striper fishing has slowed, but a few nice keepers are still around. Shad fishing is fair. Fishing is very good for catfish near Knights Landing, with fish over 10 pounds common. Salmon season opens July 16.
SHASTA LAKE: John Boitano of Phil’s Propeller and Bait and Tackle provided a report any bass angler will love. There’s a solid topwater bite, best early and late of course, but Boitano said it continues throughout the day if you stick with it and target mud lines or breezy water. Spinnerbaits and crankbaits are getting fish as well, and if that fails, fish the bottom with Senkos, Z-Mans, plastics, from 5 to 25 feet. The bass are everywhere, in the main body, in the arms, on rock ledges and main body points. It’s a post-spawn deal with just a few stragglers still on the beds. Trout trollers are still scoring, and picking up a few kings too down at 70 feet. Brad’s Cut Plugs have been the way to go, with anchovies. Popeyes and Optimizers are working as well. You can fish a little shallower in the morning but drop to 60 feet when the sun comes up.
TRINITY RIVER: Spring salmon season opens July 1. The spring flush should be over by then, with flows of 450 cfs expected. Some springers have been reported near the falls on the lower river. A few trout and halfpounders are being caught near Junction City and Douglas City. Flows at Lewiston were 700 cfs over the weekend.
AMERICAN RIVER: Shad are being caught at Discovery Park, and upriver between Sunrise and Sailor Bar. Fishing is best in the evening. Success has slowed. Flows at Fair Oaks are 2,660 cfs.
