4Reel Fishing:Good news - Ukiah Daily Journal

Good fishin’ my fellow anglers!  I hope that you all have a great July 4th weekend.  Please have patience and be kind.  There are a lot of folks out on our waterways this week. To top it off, this Sunday, July 4 is a free fresh water fishing day.  No fishing license required, no excuses, take a kid fishin’.

BLUE LAKES – It has been several weeks since the California Department of Fish and Wildlife planted Blue Lakes with trout.  The trout are up on the surface feeding early in the morning and the last hour of daylight.  Other than that, the trout are down in the deeper water.  If you are fishing from the shore, make long casts and fish off of the bottom. Powerbait, worms and night crawlers have been working well. Trollers have been hooking into trout at 25 to 30 feet deep using a down rigger. Try pulling an Action Disk with a wooly bugger, castmaster or super duper.

RUSSIAN RIVER –  How about smallmouth bass fishing the Russian River?  Fish the deep holes, try casting a rooster-tail.   You might be surprised at what you catch. Go stealth, many times, if they see you, they won’t bite.  Keep moving and you will pick up some smallies. Lots of fun!

CLEAR LAKE – The bass fishing has now settled into a more predictable pattern.  Early morning hours are the best time to fish. During the evening hours you may have to deal with the wind. So, the early morning hours are your best bet.

The top water bite has finally begun for the summer.  Try pitching frogs over weed mats. Doing so, will get you a strike. The word is that fishing the tules and weed mats from Lakeport to the State Park has been pretty good.

Also fishing “Bass Alley” across from the Red Bud boat ramp has been producing many large bass.  Successful anglers have been fishing a jig, brushhog, sweet beaver, and wacky style hooked trick worms casting them in the holes of the weed matts or casting them along the edges of the weeds. You’ll see a twitch in the line and its ”FISH ON!”

LAKE MENDOCINO – TIC -TIC – Tic!   As sad as it is to see, the water level dropping. I am not sure if you will be able to launch a boat by the time Labor Day gets here.

The largemouth and smallmouth bass have been coming on strong.  So far this year, Teresa and I have caught more quality bass in Lake Mendocino than in previous years.

This weekend the fishin’ will be tough though. If you are going to be successful, you’ve gotta get out of bed early and be on the water by 5 a.m.  For the first hour or so, try top water fishin’ a PopR or a Spittin’ Image. Then switch to drop-shottin’ an Aarons Magic Roboworm.

MILL CREEK POND – The upper Mill Creek Pond will probably be one of the most crowded fishin’ locations this week.  It will be very important of get there early in the morning to get your favorite spot.  Most of the steelhead/trout have been caught using shrimp, salmon eggs or worms with a sliding bobber.

East Fork of the RUSSIAN RIVER – Did you know, that the east fork of the Russian River near the Potter Valley bridge, has been getting stocked with trout by Fish and Wildlife? Yup, it’s true! Experienced fishermen know to fish up and down the stream to get away from the crowds of people.  Castmasters, super-dupers, rooster-tails, and small crankbaits along with chunks of crawfish tail floating with a bobber has been working the best.

MENDOCINO COAST – So far it has not been another banner year for salmon fishing on the Mendocino Coast.  Mostly small salmon are being caught. The salmon fishing has been slow, but some veteran skippers and anglers have been catching some nice fish.  Lingcod and rock fishing has still been going strong, with fishermen fishing from the shore.  For more information go to www.dfg.ca.gov.
