When people turn 90, they're allowed to slow down and take it easy. Companies, however — especially those in the competitive snack industry — have to stay spry and active if they want to remain vital.
Better Made Snack Foods, a Detroit-based company since 1930, is celebrating 90 years of business in 2020 with new products, awards and initiatives to help the community.
“We started in Detroit and we are committed to remaining in the city,” said Better Made President David Jones in a press release about the milestone anniversary. “A great deal of our success and longevity can be attributed to our loyal customers and faithful employees. We’re grateful to each and every one of them and want to thank them for 90 wonderful years”.
One thing the potato chip company does very well is offering snack fans what they want. Customer demand is the reason they sell a whopping five types of barbecue chips alone (barbecue, honey barbecue, sweet BBQ, southern-style sweet heat BBQ and red hot barbecue) and a growing number of popcorn flavors.
Better Made was named "best BBQ flavored potato chip in the United States" by the Wonderful World of Chips and Crisps a guidebook by author Paul Casella. The company also reported that its products took first place in three divisions from online food magazine The Kitchn.
The latest Better Made offering is a relaunch of a "new and improved" version of the Detroit Mix, a blend of caramel corn and cheddar cheese popcorn. It's back for the 90th anniversary along with new products like jalapeno cheddar popcorn and peanut butter-filled pretzels.
Better Made, which has been raising funds for local charities and front line workers, is still making products locally at 10148 Gratiot in Detroit. Visit bettermade.com to shop for special items such as the extra dark rainbow chips, Better Made T-shirts and the "party in a box," a package of nine bags of assorted snacks for under $13.
