Egis sees rush orders for handset fingerprint chips

Fingerprint ID chips vendor Egis Technology expects a surge in shipment pull-in from Chinese handset vendors in the third quarter of 2020, but whether this can generate a sequential revenue increase for the quarter will hinge on 8-inch foundry capacity support, according to the firm's chief financial officer George Chang.

Chang said Egis is busy fulfilling rush orders for its super-thin optical fingerprint ID chips from Chinese handset clients, but 8-inch wafer foundry capacity remains tight and the company will place wafer starts with 12-inch fabs for some chip products.

He continued Egis has yet to feel upward pressure on foundry prices, but the company's revenue increases may be affected by tight foundry capacity in the third quarter.

Egis is slated to start tape-outs for its FTDDI (fingerprint, touch control and display) chips, jointly developed with FocalTech and panel makers, later in the second half of the year, with the timetable for volume production yet to be set, industry sources said, adding that its AI accelerator chips will also enter trial production in second-half 2020.

The firm's first-half 2020 revenues slipped 3.62% on year to NT$3.173 billion (US$107.92 million).

The sources said FTDDI ICs will remain the mainstream solution for 5G handsets, which still massively adopt LCD panels.
