Colorado Parks and Wildlife has authorized an emergency fish salvage at Poudre Ponds Recreational Fishery in Greeley ahead of construction at the 35th Avenue property beginning in October.
The fish salvage is allowed only at Poudre Ponds and only during daylight hours — from sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset, according to a release from the city of Greeley.
- All anglers must have a valid Colorado fishing license following state statutes.
- No commercial angling is allowed.
- Current size, bag and possession limits for all species are suspended for Poudre Ponds only until this emergency public fish salvage is terminated.
- All legal fishing methods are allowed except for the use of dip nets, seines and snagging.
The fishery is located at 924 N. 35th Ave. Construction will begin in October and the repair work will include draining of the reservoir. Poudre Ponds will be closed to the public until April.
Access to the site is controlled by Greeley’s Natural Areas & Trails Division and will close the pond when it becomes too shallow to allow safe public access, currently anticipated in early October. The city will announce the end date of the emergency public fish salvage in conjunction with CPW.
Poudre Ponds has been stocked with catchable trout, as well as warm water species. Fish species in the pond include largemouth bass, bluegill, channel catfish, black crappie and rainbow trout, along with common carp and gizzard shad.
Greeley’s Natural Areas & Trails will partner with CPW following the construction project to rebuild the fishery in the spring with the introduction of fish habitat and a robust restocking plan with more diversity of fish species.
The Poudre River Trail between 25th and 35th avenues will close during construction for erosion protection.
Officials anticipate the closure will extend through April. Greeley’s Natural Areas & Trails division and Poudre River Trail Corridor Inc. will provide up-to-date trail closure alerts. Sign up for alerts at poudretrail.org.
