Blessed event
At a time when we can all use an infusion of “warm and fuzzy,” the “Blessing of the Animals” obliges with a sweet celebration of the special role animals play in our lives.
Conducted in remembrance of St. Francis of Assisi’s love for all of God’s creatures great and small, the Blessing includes a procession of animals that can range from dogs and cats to hamsters and even horses, all welcome at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 3, at the Myrt Tharpe Square and its gazebo in Cocoa Village.
The Rev. Gary Jackson of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church will officiate the ceremony. After the group blessings, stop to get a pet photo with Father Jackson for a $5 donation. All donations will benefit Florida Wildlife Hospital, the Palm Shores sanctuary for wild animals in need. Donations are tax-deductible.
Since 1973, Florida Wildlife Hospital has rescued, rehabilitated and released thousands of sick, injured and orphaned animals in Brevard County.
Animal ambassadors from the hospital will be there for a unique meet-and-greet. These creatures are permanent residents of the hospital because their injuries prevented release back to the wild.
All pets are welcome but must be leashed or in carriers. Dogs and cats must be up to date on vaccinations.
The event is hosted by Tails at the Barkery, a Cocoa Village custom bakery specializing in dog treats. For more information, call 321-305-4584.
Fish Fry, Oh My!
Field Manor brings back its Oyster and Fish Fry for the fifth year at 3 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 3, at the historic homestead, 750 Field Manor Drive, Merritt Island.
A fundraiser for house, the event will help further Field Manor’s education programming and allow for renovations to the property.
The menu features fried fish, fried, raw and steamed oysters and a variety of sides. Playalinda Brewing Company beer, wine, iced tea, lemonade and water will be available. Enjoy the show by Ring of Fire and bid on silent auction items.
The Field family has hosted this type event for friends and family since the 1890s.
“There are photos of the family with their friends and neighbors gathered around the outdoor kitchen preparing meals with their catch from the Indian River on the same exact piece of land that we host our Oyster and Fish Fry event present day,” said event coordinator Alexis Pernal.
“To have that tie-in to history and keep that legacy alive is a wonderful thing.”
For more details, call 321-848-0365. Visit fieldmanor.org for tickets, which are $40 for adults and $10 for children under 12. A ticket bundle for five alcoholic beverages is an additional $20.
