KATC reached out to LCG after a number of concerned calls about fish stuck in a coulee near Moncus Park.
Officials say that the the fish kill is likely causedd by water receding from the backwater following rains from Hurricane Laura. It is believed that the vegetation in that water depleted the oxygen levels in the area resulting in the large die-off, according to Drainage Director Brian Smith.
LCG says that the Vermilion River currently has a strong odor and is oxygen starved, causing the fish to enter water channels such as the coulees to seek better conditions.
Similar issues are being seen in Bayou Courtableau and the Bayou Teche, according to a response from LCG.
Similar fish kills happened following the 2016 floods. Smith says that mainly carp are being affected.
Those in the area say the recent rains have pushed many of the fish out of the area and back to open waters.
