I’m not embarrassed to say that opening a bag of chips can be a vexing exercise. The bag’s seal might be stubbornly stuck together, or your hands might already be greasy for dipping your hands into a previous bag of salty goodness. But if you yank too hard, you face the dire risk of ripping the bag, causing most, if not all, of your chips to come tumbling out of the side, and good luck trying to roll the bag back up to save some for later.
This is the Chip Eater’s Dilemma, and every bag of chips on the planet poses a risk. But what if you could perform emergency surgery on a wounded bag to ensure that further spillage is ground to a halt?
Fix a ripped chip bag with a hole punch
Enter this stellar maneuver, courtesy of Reddit. If you use a hole punch at the base of the tear, you can lessen the chance of your bag ripping further, and thereby keep your precious snacks safe. (There’s no reversing the existing tear; you’ll just need to eat below that level in the bag, alas). This process is simple, and all you need to pull it off is that hole punch.

As the video shows, your bag can still technically rip further, but it’s less likely to. The hole at the base of your tear effectively seals off the rent in the bag; basically, the tear encounters a roadblock that prevents it from further ripping with ease, making it less likely you’ll destroy it even further as you jam your hands inside to procure your next greasy chip.
While this simple action isn’t going to completely nullify the ever-present threat of a ripped bag of chips, it’s a good stopgap measure to employ if your next bag of chips suffers a mishap.
