As I attempt to write this week’s fishing report for the great Allen Bushnell, I find it noteworthy that he is not only in Alaska fishing with friends but word on the dock, is that he has procured himself a triple-digit halibut!
We may not catch halibut over 100 pounds here in the Monterey Bay, but we sure have a lot of species we can catch and some great fishing opportunities. I decided to check in with some of Monterey Bay’s cast of professionals to get an in-depth report on current fishing conditions.
From the wheelhouse of the Legacy running out of Stagnaro’s fishing trips, Jason Truesdale reported, “The seven-hour trips are getting limits of rockfish with mixed bags of good quality fish.”
The half-day trips were getting about five fish per angler, however recent trips have seen the scores climb on these shorter trips. Truesdale added, “Starting Father’s Day the live-bait ling cod trips will begin and follow through summer every Sunday!”
Staying on top of salmon, JT from the boat Miss Beth reported, “We hooked nine salmon and landed five and most weighed in the teens and big fish tripped the scale at 23 pounds.”
JT added that it has been an exceptional year with many big fish caught recently. He and his crew will continue to fish salmon as long as they are catching them and hope the run will remain into July.
Hailing from the Port of Moss Landing, Kris Victorino has been running the Kahuna. Victorino checked in with a tired yet proud tone, “We worked hard today and went the extra mile fishing the deeper water up the coast. We ended the day with limits of rockfish for 18 anglers and the fish were quality browns, Bolinas, and canary rockfish.”
Out of Monterey Charter boats, Chris’ Fishing Trips are catching limits of rockfish on a daily bases and salmon trips have resulted in a few salmon per trip. Earlier in the week private boaters had been catching salmon closer to Monterey as Marina proved to be the hot spot last weekend and into early this week. Salmon will continue to be a spotlight species as big fish continue to be caught from Soquel Hole to Marina. The key has been trying to avoid jelly fish and silver salmon. Look for schools of anchovies and fish deep in the water column. Commercial salmon season re-opened on the Wednesday from Mexico to Point Arena, with a closed zone from Point Reyes to Point San Pedro.
Light boats are used to gather squid they can be seen outside Santa Cruz and Aptos, they continue to light the skies as we near the summer solstice and the next full moon phase. With the squid spawn comes the halibut! There has been a positive showing on the halibut as anglers jig up fresh squid and drift it in front of Santa Cruz, Capitola and the beaches of Aptos. Private boats have been getting decent scores of halibut and commercial anglers are filling the local market with 10- to 30-pound fish.
The weather this weekend and early next week is taking a positive turn on the water as Northwest winds shift to a Southwest flow cooler sea breezes and calmer seas should prevail. I hope you get out for a fish with friends.
