FAIRMONT–The Knights of Columbus of Fairmont are hosting a fish boil from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday. This will be the first event held inside the building since the beginning and end of COVID-19.
The history of the fish boil goes back two years when the Orphan Grain Train gave the Knights of Columbus their equipment. When the Orphan Grain Train started the idea of this fish boil and the money collected was used to provide food, clothing, and medicine in 69 different countries. The people from Orphan Grain Train showed them how to utilize the equipment and cook the food. The equipment included a 30 to 40-gallon stainless steel tank that boils all of the food in.
“It is just unbelievable, the taste and everything,” Grand Knight Cary Villeneuve said. “The first time we had it here people were just amazed and the taste was fantastic.”
Fairmont Knights of Columbus is always looking for different ways to fundraise and different avenues to raise money. One of the main parts of their mission is charity.
The Knights of Columbus building has been closed through the COVID-19 restrictions. There were different ways the Knights of Columbus used to fundraise money for different things. The Knights of Columbus partnered with Tami’s on the Ave to do a hamburger Friday in the parking lot during the winter of 2021. The results were 480 hamburgers made and served, which raised $4800 that went to the heat, electricity, and taxes of the Knights of Columbus building.
During Lent, the Knights of Columbus had three fish and shrimp events where they served 300 individual dinners each time and raised $4500. The money from that went to Heaven’s Table Food Shelf, Hope Cafe and the Northrop Baseball team.
According to Villeneuve, the Knights of Columbus are planning to make 100 pounds of potatoes, 40 pounds of pearl onions, 200 pounds of codfish, 35 pounds of coleslaw while also providing desserts, french bread, coffee and orange juice. Villeneuve said he anticipated and hopes to have anywhere over 200 people.
There is a $15 donation expected to eat at the fish boil. There are several options to get a serving. There will be inside options for the all-you-can-eat fish boil as well as outside table options. There is also a to-go option where people can come in and get a container of food.
Villeneuve’s favorite part about this event is that its new and different and to see the amazement on people’s faces on how good the food tastes.
“I was a little leery myself on how it tastes since it was boiled,” Villeneuve said. “Last year, we were at the door asking people on the way out how they liked it and they said next time we’ll definitely be there tonight.”
The Knights of Columbus is currently deciding where the needs are better met for the money raised from this fish boil. The Knights of Columbus will get together to get input on where these funds should go.
Villeneuve wanted to send the overall message that a big part of the Knights of Columbus here in Fairmont is about charity and giving money locally to different things such as schools, churches and other places. During the winter, the Knights of Columbus raised about $57,000 that was given to St. John Vianney School.
“Most of our time and energy goes to fundraising and to give the money locally,” Villeneuve said “You see that now and you will also see that in the future.”
