PRESQUE ISLE, Maine (WAGM) - The sunny weather helped make a great day for fishing! Adriana Sanchez has the story and more on the weekends Hooked on Fishing not on drugs event.
The weather was beautiful and the fish were biting! All part of the Hooked on Fishing, not on drugs event put on by the Elks Lodge.
What’s been your favorite part so far about today? When BJ caught a fish! said Lydia Brown.
“What’s your favorite part today so far? That a caught my second fish… so it was your second time catching a fish? A few weeks ago I caught my first fish and who did you come here with today? My grandparents, and who helped you catch a fish today? Umm nobody. NOBODY? Just yourself? Wow look at you go. If this event is put on next year are you going to come back? Yes, answered Kaiden Kelly.
“So this is one of Elks drug awareness programs hooked on fishing not on drugs it’s shown that kids that get out and engage in outdoor activities are less likely to go under substance abuse,” said Reuben Caron, Exalted Ruler Elks Lodge.
Although this event is put on yearly, this time around meant a little more… given the past year.
“We’re really excited to get back here today after a year off after Covid we have a great turn out today, beautiful day a lot of kids reeling in some fish we stocked it with 500 on Wednesday and I’m glad seeing kids reeling those in,” said Caron.
There were free hot-dogs, juice, ice cream and even fishing rods for children who didn’t have any fishing gear.
“We’re able to purchase 50 fishing poles between the Elks lodge and Aroostook County conservation and Bens trading post help set them all up – the bobber the weight and the hook so when children get here all the fishing poles are set up and ready to use,” said Caron.
Every year there’s a winner for the child that caught the longest fish and a prize of a lifetime fishing license. This years winner was Ethan Bosse.
