MSCHF‘s inclination for releasing provocative items in small batches has now taken the brand to the world of snacks with the Illegal Chips release.
These limited chips take on three flavors of foods that are banned — Horse Meat (banned in 1847), Fugu Poison Blowfish, and the maggot-filled Casu Marzu Cheese. The fugu flavor has been created alongside Chef Josh Scherer of Mythical Kitchen along with food scientists.
In the product manifesto, MSCHF comments that the appeal of these flavors is that “prohibitions create desire” and that “the forbidden fruit tastes sweetest.” Available now for $12 USD for one of each flavor, those interested can head over to Illegal Chips. Check out the description for each of the flavors below:
Horse Meat Beef: A red meat flavor in the style of steak or tartare that is slightly on the sweeter side. Notes of onion, mushrooms, thyme, mustard, horseradish, primed for a complimentary red wine pairing.
Blowfish Fugu White-fish Sashimi: A subtle seafood, umami flavor reminiscent of whitefish sashimi. Evokes ponzu, soy sauce, and mirin.
Casu Marzu Cheese: A blue/gorgonzola cheese, aged brie, and white cheddar. A distinctly sharp cheese flavor, but with lighter cheddar notes to round out the overall profile.
