One million red drum fish stocked in two Bexar County lakes - KSAT San Antonio

BEXAR COUNTY, Texas – Roughly one million red drum, also known as redfish, have been stocked in two popular Bexar County lakes this week.

Texas Parks and Wildlife officials with the Inland Fisheries San Antonio District posted about the fish stocking on Facebook Monday.

Calaveras Lake and Braunig Lake are stocked annually with about one million fingerlings, which will eventually grow into 20-to-30-inch, and sometimes 40-inch fish.

Officials said the stockings are necessary because red drum don’t reproduce in freshwater environments.

Assistant District Biologist Mitch Nisbet with TPWD told KSAT that roughly 650,000 fish were stocked in Calaveras Lake and 350,000 were stocked in Braunig Lake.

“The reason it is different is because Calaveras is larger,” Nisbet explained.

He also mentioned new regulations for catfish in Braunig and Calaveras Lakes that are now in effect.

Previously, anglers were able to keep 25 fish with a 12-inch minimum length but now anglers are allowed to keep 15 fish with a 14-inch minimum length, Nisbet said.

“That catfish regulation is a special exception to the standard statewide regulation,” Nisbet said.

Anyone looking to go fishing must have a valid fishing license if they are aged 17 or older.
