Dozens of kids fished for something Saturday, Jan. 15 that you don't normally find in Douglas County waters -- rainbow trout.
It's all part of Take a Kid Fishing Weekend.
Sponsored by the Viking Sportsmen and Alexandria Public Schools Community Education, the event took place on Harry Bemo pond near the Lure Lake Bar in Alexandria. The sportsmen stocked the pond with rainbow trout, and quite a few of the fish were hauled up through the ice on Saturday.
It runs until 3 p.m. Saturday and resumes on Sunday, Jan. 16 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Children 15 and under must be a Minnesota resident and accompanied by an adult. No licenses are needed for kids or adults.
Participants should bring their own ice fishing gear although a limited amount of gear is available. Wax worms are being provided by Christopherson Bait Shop. Raffle prizes and a fishing clinic are also offered.
The Viking Sportsmen began an effort in 2019 to stock trout in area lakes, including the creek at Spruce Hill County Park.
