Lake Almanor

Plumas County has not received a drop of precipitation in 2022 and it looks like we have another seven days of the same. The long range forecast shows a chance of snow and showers beginning in February. There is still snow on the ground and lake level is inching up slightly every day. There have been large sheets of ice forming throughout the lake. On Jan. 19 there was a solid sheet of thick ice from the peninsula to Prattville north. The water temp ranged between 34.5 and 37 degrees that same day.

“The full moon killed the bite for us on Tuesday and Wednesday,” said John Crotty of Almanor Fishing Association. “We struggled to find fish and bait with my sonar screen blank most of the day. The fish we did catch were in great shape with one brown approaching double digits. I continue to slow troll with plastics and crawlers.”

Fish are scattered throughout the lake with no rhyme or reason to location or depth which mean’s fisher folk need to really search or simply resign to simply enjoying a nice day on the water in Plumas County.

Shore fishermen are catching fish around the dam with power bait and crawlers attracting the top offerings. Dry weather enabled anglers to access Hamilton Branch this last week catching a smaller grade of fish up to two pounds.

Canyon Dam remains the only usable public boat ramp. Hwy 32 and Hwy 36 are clear without delay; Hwy 70 and Hwy 89 traffic are subject to an hour delay 24/7 and of course, Hwy 70 has closed numerous times this season without warning.

Reports of ice thickness at the lake are 8 inches but fishermen are always warned that the ice thickness is not officially monitored; fishermen must use their own best judgment regarding ice fishing on Lake Davis. The Annual Ice Derby has yet to receive permits for the first weekend in February, as is the traditional date. For up to the minute notice on the Ice Derby, call J&J Grizzly Store at (530) 832-0270.
