INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (WLFI) — State Sen. Ron Alting, R-Lafayette, is working to fill an Indiana state animal vacancy.
He recently met with a Wyandotte Elementary School student to discuss the need for an official state fish. During a visit at the Indiana Statehouse, fifth-grader Arrayah DeWitt presented a research project she completed last year about the Hoosier Cavefish.
She notes the fish is only native to southern Indiana and has the word "Hoosier" in its name.
Alting says he thanks DeWitt for bringing her proposal to his attention and plans to work on legislation next year that would make the Hoosier Cavefish Indiana's official state fish.
