JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL/WATE) — Tennessee and Kentucky’s annual Free Fishing Days are approaching in early June.
Both the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency and the Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife Resources hope that access to free fishing will help get more people and their children into the activity.
Tennessee
The Volunteer State always allows free fishing on the first Saturday after the first Monday in June, which falls on June 8, 2024.
On Bobby Wilson Free Fishing Day, anyone can fish in Tennessee’s public waters and state parks without a license, even non-Tennessee residents. Private bodies of water may still charge for access.
After Free Fishing Day, anglers under the age of 15 can fish for free for Free Wishing Week. Free Fishing Week for children runs from June 8 through June 14.
A fishing license is required by the TWRA on any other date to fish. Fishing licenses can be purchased through the TWRA online starting at $33 or at some outdoor sporting stores.
The TWRA keeps a list and statewide map of fishing events for children. Click here to view them. In East Tennessee, kids’ fishing events are planned for June 8 in Knoxville, Alcoa, Gatlinburg, Loudon, Dandridge and more.
Kentucky
In Kentucky, Free Fishing Days will be held June 1-2. Like Tennessee, a license to fish is not required in the state’s public waters. However, the rules on the size and number of fish will still be in place.
The state also keeps a list of Free Fishing Day events. At several of the free events, volunteers will provide instruction and rods and reels. The fishing regulations can be found in the online fishing and boating guide.
