Learn to fish without having to buy a license first on Saturday, June 6, which is Free Fishing Day, an event held the first Saturday in June each year by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Texas residents can fish for free on any public body of water all day Saturday.
Free Fishing Day is a wonderful opportunity for anglers to share their knowledge, skills, equipment, and love for fishing with a new participant, said Craig Bonds, TPWD inland fisheries director. Also, new anglers who fall in love with the sport can buy a license for the next fishing trip, which helps conserve Texas wildlife.
“A fishing license purchase is one of the simplest and most effective ways people can support fisheries science and management,” Bonds said.
To help anglers of all ages and skill sets better celebrate Free Fishing Day, Texas Parks and Wildlife offers some helpful advice and resources.
Fishing 101
Visit the TPWD Learn to Fish webpage for a variety of videos on the basics of fishing. Resources include tips on how to get started, safety, gear, casting and baiting, and cleaning and storing fish.
Find a Place to Fish Close to Home
Texas has a plethora of lakes and rivers open to the public. Find your perfect spot by checking out the May issue of “Fish Texas,” which includes a Lake Finder where anglers can search alphabetically or by region if a specific lake is already in mind. More information and fishing tips as well as access to 150 lakes and community fishing lakes can be found on the TPWD Fish Texas blog.
Saltwater Fishing from a Pier
In the Coastal Bend, a number of public fishing piers are available and even wheelchair accessible. They offer a great way to access the sea without a boat. Public access sites are available in every bay system.
Help the Conservation Effort with Your License Purchase
One hundred percent of fishing license fees help TWPD with on-the-ground conservation efforts such as fish stocking, making Texas one of the top fishing spots in the country. For more information on licensing, visit the TPWD licenses page online.
Texas residents can save money with the Year-from-Purchase All-Water Fishing Package, which lets anglers fish in fresh and saltwater. This package is valid from the purchase date through the end of the purchase month of the next license year. (Example: License purchased on March 13, 2020, expires March 31, 2021.)
For more information on Free Fishing Day, visit TakeMeFishing.org.
If planning to fish in federal waters, a license is required for the private recreational angler red snapper season, which opened June 1.
