New renderings from Gensler reveal updated proposals to expand the Acme Smoked Fish Factory in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. The renderings are contained within a detailed Environmental Assessment Statement, which examines the potential effects of the proposed expansion on the surrounding neighborhood.

Located at 30 Gem Street, Acme’s processing facility was originally established in 1905 and is today one the leading production and distribution centers for smoked and pickled fish. Rubenstein Partners, the private development firm selected by Acme to manage the expansion, previously filed a request for zoning amendments to facilitate the construction of a mixed-use, commercial-industrial property.

The proposed expansion could span 654,300 square feet. This includes 109,300 square feet of additional processing area, 545,000 square feet of office and retail area, and a partially covered outdoor terrace spanning 21,400 square feet.

The commercial and office expansion would also include a mix of vehicular parking, bike storage, and loading berths.

The Acme Smoked Fish processing facility would contain four stories with a maximum building height of approximately 74 feet. The commercial building, which would contain office and retail uses and occupy the remainder of the block, would consist of nine stories and reach a maximum height of approximately 178.5 feet.

The overall boxy massing as well as the façade of the structure is intended to emulate the form and style of the many surrounding warehouse buildings in north Brooklyn.

The façade of the commercial building includes brick and masonry materials on the lower floors and a combination of steel and glass materials at the upper levels. The commercial office entrance will incorporate a glass-enclosed double-height lobby located along Gem Street. The façade of the new Acme Smoked Fish facility will feature a variation of dark gray textured metal paneling. The simplicity of the façade is meant to provide Acme with an opportunity to commission a large mural or installation to the exterior of the building.

Pending approvals, Acme’s expansion could be completed as early as 2024.
