Huron County fish fries going drive-thru only - Huron Daily Tribune

With the COVID-19 pandemic still continuing through the Upper Thumb, organizations that put on fish fries during Lent are opting to have them be drive-thru only.

One place that is trying Lenten fish fries for the first time is American Legion Post 499 in Port Austin. They will be from 4 to 7 p.m., or until dinners run out on March 5.

Meals cost $10 and include fried fish, fries, cole slaw, baked beans, a roll, and desert.

Linda O’Neil, the bar manager for the American Legion post, said that with the continued COVID-19 lockdown, and that other area groups put on their own fish fries, they decided to try it out to see how it goes.

“If it goes over well in the area, we’ll have some more,” O’Neil said.

Their drive-thru is set up so that drivers can go to the front door while runners can take people’s orders, collect money, and bring the food out to them. O’Neil said that people can also call ahead to place orders, at 989-738-1223.

The Legion used to put on all-you-can-eat fish and shrimp dinners, but has not been able to do so because of pandemic restrictions. If they put on more fish fries in the future, shrimp could be back on the menu.

The Legion has enough fish to make 240 dinners with O’Neil saying they hope to get about 200 people to show up. She also said that with the number of Catholics living in the area, they will be looking for a fish dinner somewhere.

“When the (Port Austin) Conservation Club did their last fish fry, theirs had a 4:30 start,” O’Neil said. “By 5:30, they were all out of fish.”

O’Neil said there was no concern among the American Legion post about hosting the event while the pandemic is still going on, since the volunteers running this are itching for something to do and it gives them a good chance to mingle as much as they can with the current restrictions.

“We feel people will appreciate that they can drive-thru,” O’Neil said, adding that the ladies of the Legion hosted their own turkey drive-thru for veterans back in November that went over well.

Among other fish fries taking place, the Grindstone Port Hope Sportsmen’s Club will be hosting two fish fries at 6101 Huron City Road in Port Hope, one on March 14 and one on March 28. Both will go from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Meals cost $10 and include fried fish, scalloped potatoes, baked beans, cole slaw, macaroni salad, fresh bread, and homemade dessert. The meals will also be take-out only.

The Rapson Sportsman’s Club holds fish fries on the first and third Fridays of the month from 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at 3155 Minnick Road in Bad Axe. Those are drive-thrus with no need to call ahead.

Their $10 dinners consist of lightly battered premium Alaskan pollack, homemade baked beans, garlic butter redskin potatoes, coleslaw, noodle salad, a dinner roll, and dessert.

The Ubly Fox Hunters Club will be holding their next fish fry on March 19. They are take-out only, cost $11, and have fish, scalloped potatoes, baked beans, macaroni salad, coleslaw, and bread and butter.

The Bad Axe Knights of Columbus will host their fish fry from 4 to 7 p.m. on March 12. Meals cost $10 and are curbside pickup.

The Port Austin Conservation Club hosts their fish fries on the fourth Friday of the month, with their next one at 4 p.m. on March 26.

The drive-thru meals are $10 and include a choice of either baked or deep fried Alaskan Pollack, redskin potatoes, baked beans, coleslaw, tuna macaroni salad, a roll, and dessert.

Some restaurants having fish fry specials include Hollijays in Owendale, Beeter’s Brewpub in Sebewaing, and Shelley’s Bar & Grill in Grindstone City.
