GRAND RAPIDS, MI - A casino with no gambling?
Such is the case of the Casino Club, voted as the Grand Rapids area’s Best Fish Fry by MLive readers.
It’s been called the Casino Club since the mid ’40s, but there’s never been any “gambling” going on, said fish fry co-chairman and secretary Joe Host. “It’s just a social club.”
Established in 1941, and affiliated with St. Mary’s Church on Scribner Avenue on the West Side of Grand Rapids, the German club was named after a card game called “Casino,” Host said.
“A lot of the returning GIs played it,” Host said. “That’s what they played, and that’s where they got the name.”
The club moved to Anne Street and Monroe Avenue for a short period of time, before moving in the mid ‘60s to its current location off Plainfield Avenue, behind Wendy’s at 3260 Salerno Drive NE.
It’s not far from Charlie’s Bar & Grille, which finished third in the voting of Grand Rapids’ Best Fish Fry. (See full results below.)
“If I could swing a golf cub that good I could probably hit them with a golf ball, but I’m not that good,” Host said.

A private club with about 900 members, Host said they have been offering the Fish Fry Fridays for years as a fundraiser to help the club with operating expenses. They typically start in January and go through the end of April.
This year they have been especially busy because nearby St. Jude Catholic Church switched to a soup supper, and Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church is not having one.
Last week, they sold more than 500 dinners in a short window of time. They offer lunch from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. and dinner from 5:30-7 p.m.
All the meals are $10 and are served with fries, coleslaw and French bread. They are to-go only.
“We got it down,” said Host, who has been involved with the fish fry since 2014 and currently co-chairs it with Mike Anderson.
Pre-pandemic, they had as many as 30 volunteers, which they needed because of dine-in meals. Now they need about a dozen. So they have cut down on expenses.
The fish is Alaskan pollock, and it’s hand-breaded.
“We have the best cooks in town,” he said.
