The word “season” means different things to different people throughout the small community of Marco Island. For many of the non-profit organizations on the island, a busy and vibrant season can determine what positive contribution to charitable works can be made.

Marco Island residents, as well as our seasonal visitors, for years looked forward to the annual weekly fish fry sponsored by the San Marco Catholic Church Knights of Columbus in cooperation with the Columbiettes. The Friday night favorite would begin every week starting with the week of Ash Wednesday and run through Lent.

Unfortunately, due to the challenges presented during this last year by the COVID-19 Pandemic, many things changed throughout our communities. “The Knights’ Fish Fry, as well as their popular spaghetti dinners, were put on hold over this last year out of an abundance of caution,” said John DeRosa, a parishioner of the church and longtime member of the Knights of Columbus.

However, earlier in March, the Diocese in Venice, in consultation with the local Marco Parish, worked out details to allow the popular event to return for the last two weeks before Easter. The compromise allowed the Knights and Columbiettes to provide a “drive-through” event on March 19 and March 26.

Those wishing to do so could call ahead and put in orders for the delicious fish dinners which they had become accustomed to over the years. In the past, those coming to the popular Friday evening fish dinner would do so by coming into the parish hall on San Marco Road to eat their dinner. On many of those Friday evenings during Lent, the lines would extend out the door, and the church would serve anywhere from 500 to 675 dinners, as well as provide beverages, salads, rolls and desserts to attendees.

Because of social distancing requirements, those numbers could not be realized this year due to spacing requirements to keep attendees safe, limiting the potential for profits that would benefit the charitable work done by the group. Instead, this year the volunteer group served from 245 to 300 meals, realizing a small profit to be used for providing support to those within the community.

At this time, the Knights and Columbiettes are planning a similar spaghetti dinner drive-through event on Friday, April 9, from 4:30 pm to 7pm. Just drive into the church parking lot and follow the directions of the Knight who will direct you stay in your car and order from the station set up to pay for your meals. The food will be brought out to you and you can exit the parking lot with your delicious dinner.
