Continuing a tradition from recent years, Fish Stripes will be providing weekly updates about Marlins who are actively playing/training during the offseason. Liga Dominicana (LIDOM)
For the first time, LIDOM games are available to stream via MLB.TV, but with this convenience comes an inflated price. The regular season package previously offered by DR Sports was $14.99—MLB is charging $24.99. The full broadcasts aren’t being archived, for some reason. Instead, occasional highlights are being posted to MLB Film Room.
Active Marlins: RHP Cody Mincey, RHP Matt Pobereyko, OF Jesús Sánchez, OF Magneuris Sierra
Mincey (Gigantes del Cibao) and Pobereyko (Estrellas Orientales) pitched scoreless relief appearances for their respective teams in Wednesday’s season openers.
Sierra (Toros del Este) entered as a pinch-runner in the top of the ninth inning, representing the potential tying run...and got caught stealing. During the MLB regular season, he went a perfect 11-for-11 in stolen base attempts.
Bryan De La Cruz isn’t active for the Toros yet—he and his wife Darling just welcomed their second child.
Marlins legend Hanley Ramírez still has something left in the tank! The soon-to-be 38-year-old is back with Tigres del Licey. He went 2-for-4 on Wednesday as their starting designated hitter.
Arizona Fall League
Active Marlins: C Will Banfield, OF JJ Bleday, RHP Justin Evans, RHP Evan Fitterer, 1B Troy Johnston, LHP Zach King, OF Kameron Misner, LHP Josh Simpson, LHP Jefry Yan
Bleday is a leading candidate for AFL Hitter of the Week honors. He’s got 8 RBI since Monday (14 overall)! Defensively, the Mesa Solar Sox have utilized him in left field.
Misner has been making hard contact. On the other hand, he’s vying for the league lead in strikeouts (16).
In a microscopic sample size, Yan is overpowering the competition.
Something to monitor with Fitterer: he hasn’t pitched since October 20 and isn’t listed as the probable starter for any of Mesa’s remaining games this week.
King was just added to the roster on October 23. His season with High-A Beloit was cut short by an injury. No AFL appearances yet for the 6-foot-6 southpaw.
