PARIS — To the disappointment of many, this year’s Halloween Fish Hatchery Haunt in Paris Park has been canceled.

The event, which has been sponsored and runs in past years by Ferris State University student group Circle K International and by the Cadillac Kiwanis Club, has been a unique experience for families and students looking for October fun.

Circle K president Riley Sherman said the decision to cancel the haunt was not an easy one.

“We will sadly not be hosting the event this year due to lack of members,” Sherman said. “However, it is a fun event normally because it provides that classic haunted house experience that’s close to campus, but isn’t too scary or expensive. It’s just a great way for people in our area to enjoy the Halloween season.”

The haunt has been popular in the past for its memorable location and decorations, with students donning costumes and creating family-friendly scares and more. In past years, the lower level of the hatchery was more child-friendly, and both floors offered a variety of frights.

Many of the props used throughout the haunted hatchery were donated from various organizations, such as Meijer or the Mecosta-Osceola Career Center.

Sherman said the community effort to work together to create the haunt was one of the benefits of putting it on.

“We believe the hatchery is the perfect place for the haunted house due to its location and its aesthetic,” Sherman said. “As an older building with a lot of open space, it gives off spooky vibes that help immerse people as they go through it."

“We’ve really appreciated the cooperation we’ve had in recent years and I feel it is the most positive aspect of the haunted hatchery,” he added. “We have worked with other organizations like the OPTICS club to set up and advertise in the past, and it provides a lot of satisfaction to meet new people and work together on a common goal. Plus it is always nice to see the fruits of our labor after all that work.”

Moving forward, Sherman said he hopes to gain new members and be able to continue the tradition into the future.

“My hope for the future is to be able to host the event again and bring more people into our folds to make it even better,” Sherman said. “I’m disappointed we aren’t able to act as a club and carry on with this event in the present so I hope we can bring it back in the future and carry on the tradition.”

Circle K International is a community service organization that specializes in helping the children and families of the Big Rapids area.

The organization focuses on service, fellowship, and leadership by remaining involved with service projects like the annual Haunted Fish Hatchery, the Salvation Army Angel Tree shopping, the hair drive, Easter baskets for Mecosta County foster children, Ferris' Big Event, and District Convention.
