Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. said it will build a fabrication facility for specialty chips in Japan and plans to begin production there in late 2024, a strategically important step for the country amid chronic chip shortages.
The Taiwanese company has the Japanese government’s support for the fab though the plan is still subject to board approval, Chief Executive Officer C.C. Wei said in a conference call after earnings results. Japan’s government has said it is considering financial incentives to improve the security of the country’s supply chain.
