WILLIAMSBURG — FISH, Inc. has been preparing for a move to their new locations at 312 & 314 Second Street.

The non-profit organization has selected College Creek Construction, a local Williamsburg company, to do the renovations of the interiors of both buildings. The renovation project will give FISH the open space needed for their food pantry and clothes closet operation. The food pantry will be located at 312 and the clothing closet will be located at 314.

The preparations were launched into action following the Williamsburg City Council’s approval of a special zoning permit awarded to FISH at the Oct. 14 City Council Meeting which allows for a Not-For-Profit Retail and Distribution Facility in the B-2 Corridor Business District.

“The builder’s estimate is about 90 days to complete all work, barring anything unforeseen,” said FISH President Jack Trotter. “We have had discussions with Zach Trogdon, Executive Director of WATA, concerning the institution of bus service to the 312-314 Second Street site since a significant number of our clients use commercial transportation to get to us and are hopeful we can get this done.”

Given its current timeline, FISH hopes to open their new location sometime in January 2022. Trotter says that in the meantime, the organization continues to operate out of its current location at 312 Waller Mill Road. This location does have a bus service, courtesy of WATA.

“We are so fortunate to be in such a generous and giving community. Among unique fundraisers, ‘The Costume Sale’, a fundraiser sponsored by William & Mary’s Catholic Campus Ministry (CCM) for FISH, is historically held in October each year,” said Trotter. “All clothing items have been donated to FISH and sorted as unusual: vintage, international, formal, holiday. These ‘attic treasures’ are designated for the CCM students to include in their annual campus fundraiser with all proceeds going directly to FISH. We are deeply grateful to the students of Catholic Campus Ministries for such a successful annual event. We recently benefited from successful food drives ranging from a “Trunk or Treat” event sponsored by Chic-fil-A, located on Mooretown Road, with participating local police and fire departments, to a food collection undertaken by the students and teachers at Norge Elementary School that donated 2,600 food items to FISH. Our future is bright with children like these.”

During the holiday season, FISH will remain open throughout November and December to serve their clients on weekdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the exception of the day before Thanksgiving and the day after (Nov. 24th through Nov. 26th) and Christmas Eve and New Year Eve (the 24th and 31st of December).

“The all-volunteer 501(c)(3) non-profit organization is always looking for committed men and women who, having been successful during their working years, simply want to give back to their community by serving the under-served,” said Trotter.

Anyone who would like to volunteer for a day or two per month should contact FISH’s Volunteer Coordinator, Martha Buell at mtonka@cox.net.
