Aquaponics: Growing plants with fish - FOX19

CLERMONT COUNTY, Ohio (WXIX) - In Williamsburg Township, an area with many farmers and gardeners, barns are typical to see. However, the barn located on one farmer’s property looks different than what you’d expect.

The barn is actually a greenhouse inside, housing not only vegetation but also fish!

Roothouse Aquaponics, founded by Mike McGraw, operates year-round and grows crops by using tilapia fish.

“The tilapia provide one-hundred percent of the nutrient source for the plants,” says McGraw, “so it is a living ecosystem.”

The tilapia are raised on the farm and their waste is used to help provide nutrients to the plants.

The plants either grow in water that has the waste or they grow in rocks that have more of the solid waste.

Nothing is wasted at the Roothouse Aquaponics farm - roughly 600 pounds of tilapia are rotated each month and provide nearly 6,000 heads of lettuce per month!

This farm operation is special, not only for how it gathers nutrients for the plants, but also for how it conserves water.

“Very very minimal water as is compared to soil farming. we also do it in a much tighter space. We’re on a fifth of an acre greenhouse here growing well more than ten acres of equivalent soil production and we do that year-round with rainwater,” McGraw explains.

McGraw also added that these plants aren’t treated with any chemicals, pesticides, herbicides or synthetics. The Roothouse Aquaponics team monitors everything to ensure the food is as clean as possible.

One-hundred percent of the water is rainwater that is collected and circulated through a process called biofiltration.

McGraw’s company grows and sells various kinds of lettuce, kale, chard, herbs and sashimi-grade tilapia.

Roothouse Aquaponics sells these veggies and fish at Jungle Jim’s as well as Country Fresh, Kramer’s and Findlay Markets.

You can learn more about on Roothouse Aquaponics website or on their Facebook page.
