Fish and Wildlife will be counting non-native trout in Lake Lenore next week - NCWLIFE News

A non-native trout that’s thriving in Grant County’s Lake Lenore will undergo a population count next week.

The state Department of Fish and Wildlife will assess the health of the Lahontan cutthroat trout, a species native to Oregon, Nevada, and California.

The agency plans to set 24 trap nets to capture, weigh, and release the fish back into the lake.

The survey is not expected to interfere with normal boating and fishing.

The Lahontan trout is an anomaly in Lake Lenore: Not only does it appear to thrive despite the highly alkaline water, it’s also been known to grow to an unusual 30 inches in length.
