Fish tracking project being conducted at Lake Jocassee, officials say
THIS IS WYFF NEWS FOUR TODAY. AN UPSTATE CITY SAYS THEY’RE GETTING BACK TO THEIR ROOTS BY REJUVENATING THEIR DOWNTOWN. WHY THEY’RE DOING THIS AND WHAT LIES AHEAD IS COMING UP. PLUS CREWS ACROSS THE CAROLINAS PREPARING FOR POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS WINTER WEATHER MIX THIS WEEKEND. GOOD MORNING. I’M PEYTON FURTADO. THANK YOU FOR JOINING US HERE TODAY. WE’RE STARTING WITH OUR WEATHER RIGHT NOW BECAUSE WE DO HAVE SOME WINTER WEATHER IN SOME AREAS. OH MY GOSH. YEAH. THIS IS THE NANTAHALA OUTDOOR CENTER IN BRYSON CITY. WE HAD A FEW FLURRIES EARLIER TODAY, BUT MY GOSH, IT’S JUST COMING DOWN RIGHT NOW. METEOROLOGIST SYDNEY SULLIVAN IS IN THE STUDIO WITH US. SHE IS KEEPING A CLOSE EYE ON ALL OF THIS. SIDNEY HAD AS HER MORNING LOOK. I WILL SAY RIGHT TOWARDS BRYSON CITY. THAT’S WHERE WE ARE SEEING THE HEAVIEST OF THE SNOWFALL. ALSO SEEING SOME OTHER LOCATIONS, SEEING A LITTLE BIT OF A WINTRY MIX, PUSHING THROUGH PARTS OF HENDERSON VILLE INTO NORTHERN RUTHERFORD COUNTY. SO YES, WE’RE SEEING A LITTLE BIT OF A MIXED BAG OF PRECIPITATION THIS MORNING. SOMEWHAT DRIER CONDITIONS TOWARDS THE SOUTHEAST OF GREENVILLE, PUSHING INTO LAURENS AND GREENWOOD FOR THE TIME BEING. BUT WE’RE STILL TRACKING SOME LIGHT TO MODERATE DOWNPOURS. AND AGAIN, THAT WINTRY MIX ACROSS HIGHER ELEVATIONS OF WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA. SO HENDERSONVILLE YES, YOU ARE STARTING TO TAP IN ON SOME OF THAT. NOT TO SAY THESE OTHER LOCATIONS THAT YOU’RE SEEING PRIMARILY GREEN COULDN’T SEE SOME OF THIS WINTRY MIX MIX IN BRIEFLY, ESPECIALLY HIGHER ELEVATIONS WHERE YOU SEE THE BLUE. THAT’S WHERE WE ARE PRIMARILY SEEING SOME LIGHT SNOWFALL BEGINNING TO DEVELOP AS WE MOVE THROUGHOUT THE NEXT COUPLE OF HOURS. NOW, ONCE WE GET TOWARDS THE DAYBREAK AND THEREAFTER, A LOT OF THIS ACTIVITY WILL TRANSITION INTO MAINLY RAINFALL ACROSS OUR AREA. AS YOU CAN SEE, TEMPERATURES ARE MAINLY IN THE 30S, PRIMARILY TOWARDS THAT. UH, FREEZING POINT RIGHT TOWARDS ASHEVILLE. AND INTO RUTHERFORDTON. SO THOSE ARE WHERE WE ARE WATCHING THAT TRANSITION FROM RAIN INTO A WINTRY MIX OR SOME LIGHT SNOWFALL FOR THE REST OF US, MID TO UPPER 30S. THIS IS ALSO COMING WITH A BIT OF A BREEZE. SO DO TAKE IT SLOW IF YOU ARE GOING TO BE OUT AND ABOUT THIS MORNING, AS WE ARE LOOKING AT QUITE A BIT OF AN ACTIVE START THIS SATURDAY MORNING, THE GOOD NEWS IS, IS WE WILL START TO SEE DRIER CONDITIONS MOVE ON IN. ONCE WE MOVE ON INTO THIS AFTERNOON. BUT COMING UP, I’LL HAVE A CLOSER LOOK AT THE LATEST IMPACTS OF THIS RAIN AND WINTRY WEATHER. AND WHEN WE SEE MORE SUNSHINE RETURN TO THE AREA. IN THE FALL, EVERY SINGLE COUNTY HOLDS A WINTER WEATHER PREP DAY. THAT’S WHERE THE CREWS DOUBLE CHECK THE WINTER WEATHER EQUIPMENT, WHICH HAS BEEN SITTING THROUGH THIS SUMMER. ORDER THE SALT AND THE SAND THAT’S GOING TO BE NECESSARY THROUGHOUT THE WINTER. CREWS ACROSS WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA YESTERDAY PREPARING FOR THIS WINTRY MIX HEADED TO THE MOUNTAINS WITH DANGEROUS ICE ACCUMULATION IN THE FORECAST. THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION SAYS IT’S READY WITH SAND, SALT AND ALL THE TOOLS NEEDED TO PRETREAT THE ROADS AND TO CUT ANY LIMBS OR BRANCHES THAT MAY FALL. BECAUSE OF THIS, ICE CREWS STARTED WORKING IN 12 HOUR SHIFTS TO KEEP THE ROADS AS CLEAR AS THEY CAN FOR ANY TRAVEL THROUGH THE REGION. TODAY. IT DOESN’T LOOK LIKE A BIG ONE, LIKE I SAID EARLIER, BUT I THINK ALL OUR TEAM IS GETTING PREPARED AND WE SHOULD BE READY TO GO. THE CITY OF GREENVILLE IS ALSO PREPARING FOR POTENTIAL IMPACTS IN THE UPSTATE THIS WEEK. CREWS SAY THEY’VE LOADED ABOUT 15 PIECES OF EQUIPMENT TO BE PREPARED FOR JUST ABOUT ANYTHING. THEY SAY THEY’VE BEEN TRAINED AND THEY’RE READY FOR CHANGING WEATHER. THIS MORNING. PASSENGERS ON AN ALASKA AIRLINES FLIGHT HEADING TO CALIFORNIA GOT THE SHOCK OF A LIFETIME FRIDAY. THE WINDOW ON THE BOEING 737 NINE PLANE POPPED OFF JUST 20 MINUTES INTO THE FLIGHT. 171 PASSENGERS AND SIX CREW MEMBERS WERE ON BOARD, BUT NO SERIOUS INJURIES HAVE BEEN REPORTED. THE PLANE MADE ITS WAY BACK SAFELY TO PORTLAND INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, WHERE IT DEPARTED. THE FAA SAYS THE AIRCRAFT GOT ITS AIRWORTHINESS CERTIFICATION IN OCTOBER OF LAST YEAR. THE AIRLINE AND THE NATIONAL TRANSPORTATION SAFETY BOARD SAY THEY ARE INVESTIGATING EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED. BUT IN THE MEANTIME, ALASKA AIRLINES SAYS IT’S BEEN IT’S GROUNDED. ITS FLEET OF BOEING 3779 PLANES IN OCONEE COUNTY. A MAN IS ACCUSED OF CLIMBING INTO A CHILD’S WINDOW AND SEXUALLY ASSAULTING HER. DEPUTIES SAY MARVIN LOBO IS CHARGED WITH CRIMINAL SEXUAL CONDUCT WITH A MINOR. INVESTIGATORS SAY LOBO WENT INTO THE HOME THROUGH THE MINOR’S WINDOW TUESDAY NIGHT AFTER CONSENT WAS GIVEN. AFTER AN INVESTIGATION. HE WAS ARRESTED. A GREENVILLE WOMAN IS FACING LIFE IN PRISON FOR HER ROLE IN A SEX TRAFFICKING SCHEME. 34 YEAR-OLD BRITTANY KRAMER PLEADED GUILTY THIS WEEK TO FEDERAL COURT. WE’RE TOLD EVIDENCE SHOWED KRAMER WORKED TOGETHER WITH OTHERS TO EXPLOIT WOMEN IN THE COMMERCIAL SEX TRADE BY FORCE, FRAUD AND COERCION. SHE FACES A MAXIMUM SENTENCE OF LIFE AND $250,000 IN FINES. IN THE PLEA AGREEMENT, KRAMER ALSO AGREED TO PAY VICTIMS RESTITUTION. IN A WARNING COMING FROM THE ASHEVILLE POLICE, OFFICERS ARE URGING THE PUBLIC TO BE CAUTIOUS AS CAR BREAK-INS SURGE THROUGHOUT THE CITY SINCE DECEMBER 14TH. POLICE SAY THERE HAVE BEEN 61 REPORTED INCIDENTS OF VEHICLES DAMAGED IN SEVERAL DIFFERENT ASHEVILLE LOCATIONS. MOST RECENTLY, THIS HAPPENED AT HOTELS ON TUNNEL ROAD, HENDERSONVILLE ROAD AND SMOKEY PARK HIGHWAY. IN MOST CASES, WE’RE TOLD THE SUSPECT SMASHED THE WINDOWS BUT DID NOT TAKE ANYTHING. ANYONE WITH INFORMATION IS ASKED TO CALL POLICE. AND IN ANDERSON COUNTY, A MAN IS IN CUSTODY IN CONNECTION WITH A HOMICIDE. WE’RE TOLD IT HAPPENED ON CLEVELAND ROAD YESTERDAY MORNING. THE CORONER SAYS STEVEN WILKIE WAS FOUND DEAD JUST AFTER 8:00. HE’D BEEN HIT WITH A SHARP OBJECT. DEPUTIES SAY ANTHONY RODRIGUEZ IS NOW CHARGED WITH WILKIE’S MURDER. WE’RE TOLD A FIGHT LED UP TO THIS INCIDENT IN JUST OVER 24 HOURS. OFFICIALS SAY THERE HAVE BEEN THREE HOUSE FIRES AND TWO BODIES FOUND IN MACON COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA. FIRE OFFICIALS SAY THEY FOUND TWO BODIES DESTROYED INSIDE THIS HOME. THEN EARLY YESTERDAY MORNING, CREWS WERE CALLED TO A THIRD FIRE ON DILLES KNOB ROAD. THE MACON COUNTY FIRE MARSHAL’S OFFICE IS STILL INVESTIGATING THIS. WE’RE SWITCHING GEARS NOW BECAUSE IN LAWRENCE, THERE FOCUSING ON SMALL BUSINESSES AND THEIR HISTORY, A FORMULA. CITY OFFICIALS SAY MADE THEIR DOWNTOWN GREAT. NOW THEY’RE GETTING BACK TO THEIR ROOTS. OUR RAY REYNA REPORTS ON THE CITY’S EFFORTS. THE CITY OF LAWRENCE JUST RENOVATED THIS PART OF THEIR TOWN SQUARE. MAKE IT MORE FRIENDLY TO PEDESTRIANS. IT’S ONE OF THE LITTLE THINGS THEY SAY THEY’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’T REALLY ABOUT ONE BIG THING THE REVITALIZATION IS DOING SMALL THINGS CONSISTENTLY OVER A LONG PERIOD OF TIME, AND THOSE SMALL THINGS INCLUDE CAR SHOWS AND OTHER EVENTS THAT WILL BE HELD AT THE SQUARE THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. SARAH BETH MCCALL, WHO GREW UP IN LAWRENCE, JUST OPENED HER BOUTIQUE IN A BIGGER LOCATION ON MAIN STREET. IT’S BETTER LOCATION, BETTER VISIBILITY. I THINK IT WILL REALLY HELP. OUR HOPE IS THAT IT’S GOING TO HELP GROW MY BUSINESS, AND I REALLY HAVE A GOOD FEELING ABOUT THIS YEAR. I HAVE A GOOD FEELING ABOUT THIS SPACE. WITH RENOVATIONS ONGOING AND PROJECTS IN THE WORKS, MCCALL SAYS SHE’S ALREADY SEEING PROGRESS. A LOT OF TIMES WHENEVER YOU GROW UP IN A SMALL TOWN, YOU WANT TO MOVE AWAY, AND HONESTLY, I’M SO GLAD THAT I DID NOT DO THAT AND THAT I WAS ABLE TO OPEN IN THE WAY THAT LAWRENCE HAS GROWN. IT’S AMAZING. SO THAT’S SUPER EXCITING FOR BUSINESSES HERE IN LAWRENCE. RAY ARENA, WYFF NEWS FOUR.
