Michigan’s six state fish hatcheries will each see millions of dollars in upgrades during the next three years. Projects are kicking off this summer.
Several of the sites have only seen limited updates since the late 1970s, which means facilities and equipment are pushing 50 years old.
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources received $30 million from the state general fund to bring the hatcheries up to date.
The hatcheries support Michigan’s fish stocking program, including housing brood stock and rearing brook, lake, brown and rainbow trout; Arctic grayling; splake; steelhead; Chinook, Atlantic and coho salmon; walleye; and muskellunge.
Receiving the largest portion of the funding is Wolf Lake State Fish Hatchery in Van Buren County with $11 million. Platte River State Fish Hatchery in Benzie County will get $6 million in upgrades. Marquette (Marquette County), Thompson (Schoolcraft County) and Harrietta (Wexford County) state fish hatcheries will each receive $3.5 million worth of improvements. Oden State Fish Hatchery in Emmet County will receive $2.6 million.
The projects fall into three categories: infrastructure, energy-efficiency and biosecurity. Things like roofing and paving are planned, along with new electrical systems and emergency generators, HVAC and more. Work is expected to take place at each hatchery during summers 2024, 2025 and 2026.
Hobbs + Black Architects of Lansing is spearheading the project design with partners like McMillen Inc. of Boise, Idaho – one of the nation’s best aquaculture design and construction firms.
Construction will be managed by Spence Brothers Construction of Traverse City for the northern three facilities and Christman Constructors of Lansing for the southern three facilities.
