TOWN OF BRASHER, New York (WWNY) - Can you still fish the Deer River in the Town of Brasher?

The State says ‘yes’, but offers safety reminders following its citation against North Country Dairy in North Lawrence after the discovery of sewer fungus in the river.

The Department of Environmental Conservation says the primary polluter is the dairy processor and will work with the company to fix the problems. Meanwhile, residents are left with white, jelly-like blobs in the water, sewage fungus, that can suffocate fish.

If you fish the Deer River, here’s what the State DEC says: while fishing, keep your hands away from your mouth and eyes and cover any open wounds. This reduces the chances of getting sick from the water.

Next, wash your hands after fishing, especially before eating.

You’re encouraged to keep harvested fish cold and wear gloves when skinning and trimming fish.

You’re also encouraged to cook the fish thoroughly.

The Deer River is a tributary of the St. Regis River, where the Department of Health recommends only one fish meal a month because of mercury levels.
