A rowdy fan who tossed potato chips at Tadej Pogačar and Jonas Vingegaard in Saturday’s thriller in the Pyrénées at the Tour de France spent the night in a French jail cell.

French police lining the Tour route Saturday quickly identified the unruly fan who made headlines for all the wrong reasons.

He was placed in “garde à vu,” or police detention in a French jail. He faces a French judge Sunday.

The French daily Le Parisien reported that authorities were able to spot the salty aggressor and place him in detention in the aftermath of Saturday’s stage.

The paper reported that the fan, identified as a 32-year-old Frenchman, was held in detention to sober him up. He will face a French judge Sunday for aggravated violence, the newspaper reported.

“He passed the afternoon quite drunk,” one nearby fan told Le Parisien. “It was a beautiful Tour de France afternoon, with parties, meet ups, and cycling enthusiasts right up to this stupid gesture.”

The incident occurred with just over 2km to go in Saturday’s Pyrénéen epic stage, when the fan — shirtless and shoeless with a flag draped around his neck — blithely tossed a bag of potato chips at the attacking Pogačar.

Moments later, the chasing Vingegaard also said he saw the fan tossing potato chips toward his face. Not quite the feed zone the world’s best cyclists were expecting.

“At one moment, I think it was potato chip, it was sudden and close. At the moment my body went into panic for one second,” Pogačar said of the unexpected surprise. “It was crazy today with the fans.”

CPA president Adam Hansen took to social media to criticize the scene, and said the rider’s association would also pursue legal action.

Protective barriers only began with under 2km to go in the long, twisting climbs to Pla d’Adet, allowing fans to get right into the faces of the climbing racers.

French police line the route at various intervals, and were to able quickly identify the potato-chip assailant.

The Tour continues Sunday with another mountain stage in the 197.7km five-climb “queen stage” from Loudenvielle to Plateau de Beille.
