ISHPEMING, Mich. (WLUC) - On Thursday around 9:15 a.m., officers from the Ishpeming Police Department were called to the Jasper Ridge campground for a possible felonious assault involving a firearm.
Police say the incident occurred on a trail off of the campgrounds heading toward the Ishpeming Cemetery. Off the trail is the old Ishpeming Fish Hatchery, which has been abandoned for several years.
Investigators say a male and female subject were inside the fences in the area of the Fish Hatchery and confronted a hiker about trespassing on the land. Then, the male subject reportedly brandished a firearm. This incident was not reported right away, and some time passed before officers were notified.
Officers attempted contact with the male and female at the hatchery building. After several attempts, a search warrant was obtained and officers entered the fenced property, conducting an extensive search of the area. Officers found guns in the abandoned building. However, no subjects were located.
The guns found inside the building were confiscated by officers.
Police are asking anyone who knows the identity of the subjects who appear to be staying at the old Fish Hatchery to contact the Ishpeming Police Department at (906) 486-4416, or Central Dispatch at 911 or the non-emergency number at (906) 475-9912.
Officers said this incident was isolated and there is no immediate danger to the community. The names of the possible subjects will not be released at this time as the investigation continues.
The Ishpeming Police Department was assisted on scene by the Negaunee Police Department, Michigan State Police, Michigan State Police K9, Michigan State Police Emergency Response Team and Marquette County Search and Rescue.
