GENOA, Wis. (WXOW) - As we all know too well, many events are getting canceled or moved online, but here's a new one: Virtual Fishing Week.
The Genoa National Fish Hatchery partnered with the Upper Mississippi National Wildlife and Fish Refuge and the Allamakee County Conservation Board to bring the public a virtual fishing week.
Staff at the hatchery said they hope this event motivates people to get out and go fishing, following CDC guidelines of course.
Virtual Fishing Week will provide information to new and experienced anglers not only about fishing, but about other animals they could encounter, like freshwater mussels.
Environmental Education Specialist at the hatchery Raena Parsons said there are many great topics to look forward to next week. She gave a couple of examples. "Each day of our fishing event there is a different theme or topic so folks can tune in and learn how to tie two different types of fishing knots, they can learn how to cast a closed faced spin reel," said Parsons.
Other topics include learning about the types of fish that live in our waters, invasive species and even some fish recipes if you bring home a lucky catch.
The event starts on Saturday, May 16 and lasts through next week. The hatchery says it thought this would be a fun idea, especially for families looking for something to do outdoors.
To participate in the Virtual Fishing Week, you can follow along on the Hatchery's Facebook page or their website.
