One of Portland’s Best New Cocktail Bars Will Transform into a Temporary Fish and Chips Shop - Eater Portland

Unlike some other bars and restaurants around town which have turned to delivery and limited takeout menus, the stylishly subterranean whisky and cocktail bar Scotch Lodge has remained closed. The bar’s modern French dining wasn’t meant for takeout, owner Tommy Klus says, and as bars are still unable to serve takeout cocktails or spirits, there was little reason for it to be open. But now the space will reopen with a new pop-up from the same team — Oui Chippy will specialize in casual, seafood-focused takeout inspired by fish and chips shops in the United Kingdom, plus wine and beer.

Klus has had the idea for Oui Chippy for some time, but the closed dining room provided something of a necessary opportunity. “In a season when restaurants are closing and we’re all scrambling to adapt, we couldn’t find a way to make Scotch Lodge a takeout restaurant that made sense,” Klus says. “So we thought, what if we give Portland something new that is takeout-friendly and isn’t competing with our friends and neighbors?”

In that regard, Oui Chippy will feature food inspired by his visits to fish and chips shops in the UK and his love for poutine, including fried fish and hand-cut chips, lamb poutine, crab sandwiches, and even chip butty, a fry-and-butter sandwich and iconic UK snack. “Tim [Artale, Scotch Lodge’s chef], who is working on the menu, has always taken kind of a French modern approach, so he will put his spin on all of it,” Klus says. “It will be fun, and the chip butty will be cheap.”

While customers still won’t be able to enjoy the celebrated spirits list or the high-end cocktails from Scotch Lodge, the new program will allow Klus and the team to sell some wine and beer. Diners can expect chilled bottles of sherry, draft-filled bottles of white wine, jars of pilsner, and cheap canned beers to-go. And they won’t have to wait long — Klus says the team is shooting for Wednesday, May 27 to roll the program out. Oui Chippy will start with four to five days of service, noon to 7:30 p.m. (ish), with the team possibly adding more days as it goes along. To start, it will offer contact-free takeout, but no delivery.
