A Pennsylvania fishing record changed hands on Monday, when a 56.3-pound flathead catfish caught in the Schuylkill River by Jonathan Pierce, of Roxborough, was officially weighed in at Blue Marsh Outdoors in Bernville.
Although the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission won’t formally announce the new top flathead ever recorded in the state, the catfish bested by existing record by nearly 6 pounds. That record was held by Jeff Bonawitz, of Lancaster, for a 50-pound 7-ounce he pulled from the Susquehanna River in Lancaster County last year.
It appears to be the first state fish record to change this year.
One other record changed last year. A 31-pound 13-ounce lake trout caught in Lake Erie by Keith Miller, of Cranberry, took over the top spot for its species.
