San Antonio knows spice. From fresh jalapeños to Flamin’ Hot everything, we love to feel the burn. And that makes our palates perfectly tuned for a new line of kettle-cooked potato chips that recently hit the market.
Austin-based Amplify Snack Brands — makers of SkinnyPop Popcorn and Pirate’s Booty Puffs — has just launched the spicy Krakatoa Hot Chips. The chips are named after a volcano near Java that famously erupted in 1883, killing 36,000 people and darkening skies around the world for several years. Krakatoa continues to be active and erupted in April.
The flavors are ranked by Scoville Heat Units ranging from relatively tame — the lime- and serrano-flavored Sour King clocks in at 5,840 — to a face-melting 38,700 in the Black Magic chips, which are spiced with ghost, habanero, cayenne and other chiles.
My favorites were the aptly named Mustard’s Revenge and the Sichuan peppercorn-spiked Kung Pow!, which found my personal sweet spot at 9,490 and 14,500 heat units, respectively. The Black Magic were hot enough to require considerable flame-quenching in the form of cold beer.

All fire aside, these chips work because they are a superb example of kettle-cooked potato chip. Even if these things were left plain, you’d still find me chowing through a bag of that crunchy goodness.
Look for Krakatoa Hot Chips in Walmart Supercenter locations across San Antonio priced at $3.49 per bag.
